Chapter Sixty-Eight: Something Feels Off!
“This place is vast, and it looks like a valley,” Qin Feng said as he surveyed the surroundings. He sensed this was an ideal spot for an ambush.
“Captain, I think we can set an ambush here. If we hide well and wait for the enemy to arrive, we can strike them one by one,” Qin Feng suggested.
War Hawk scrutinized the area. He too felt this place was excellent—dense forests all around, and they stood atop a hill. From this vantage point, they could overlook the valley below, making it easier to observe enemy movements and carry out an ambush. This would give them a tactical advantage, allowing them to eliminate the enemy more efficiently.
“This terrain is like a pouch; we’re at the opening. If the enemy shows up, we can fight them fiercely, and wipe them out,” War Hawk remarked, finding the location suitable for battle. He turned to Shadow Flyer and asked, “Shadow Flyer, can you confirm this is the spot? If so, we’ll proceed to the next phase.”
Shadow Flyer reviewed the intelligence he had gathered, thought for a moment, and replied, “Yes, this is the place, Captain. This is where we’re to carry out the mission.” He nodded, “It’s ideal for an ambush.”
“Everyone take a look—do you think it’s really suitable?” War Hawk glanced at the team, believing it wise to pool their opinions so they could make the best decision and be ready for combat.
“Captain, I think it’s perfect for an ambush. If I set some booby traps here, we can fight the enemy head-on,” Black Wolf said. As the demolition expert, he felt he could lay mines and traps all around, making it easier to deal with the enemy and showcase their strength, thus completing the mission more effectively.
“Captain, I agree. I can hide in the thick brush and use my light machine gun to mow down the enemy,” Snow Leopard added. He was the assault trooper, skilled with the light machine gun, and believed an ambush here would be highly effective.
“Good, since everyone agrees, let’s proceed with the ambush,” War Hawk nodded, scanning the surroundings and speaking thoughtfully, “Black Wolf, lay mines, booby traps, chain mines—set everything in place and make a deep trap.”
“Shadow Flyer, scout five kilometers ahead. The enemy should be approaching soon. If you spot them, alert us, and we’ll prepare for battle.”
“Snow Leopard, hide at the eastern entrance of the valley. If any armed bandits try to escape, engage them. Take out anyone you find; don’t let them flee into our territory and cause unnecessary trouble.”
Once everyone was in position, they transformed the landscape into a giant trap. If the enemy came, they’d walk right into it, and the team would deal with the bandits and accomplish their mission.
“Fengzi, you’re the sniper. Provide real-time intel and fire support. Where will you set up your sniper’s nest?” War Hawk committed the terrain to memory, assigning tasks carefully, ensuring everyone worked together to handle the armed bandits and complete the mission. The mission was paramount; only by accomplishing it could they return with honor.
“There’s a vantage point to the west, with good visibility—perfect for sniping. I’ll set up there,” Qin Feng replied. He had already scouted the area and found it ideal for a sniper’s ambush.
“Good. Get into position and prepare to snipe. We’ll ambush to the east. Be careful and protect yourself. Wait for my signal—when I say attack, everyone opens fire. Remember, the sound of gunfire is your command. I’ll communicate orders via wireless headset. Is everyone clear?”
“Clear,” they all replied. They knew the real battle was about to begin. This was the final preparation; only by being ready could they fight effectively and complete their mission.
War Hawk hefted his weapon and moved eastward up the hill. The others sought their positions, Shadow Flyer went ahead to scout, and everyone got into place, vanishing into the forest.
Qin Feng reached the sniper’s vantage point and settled into his hiding spot.
Yet, he sensed something was amiss. He couldn’t pinpoint what, but he wondered if the ambush tactic he’d suggested was truly wise.
Qin Feng felt uneasy. He had planned a cautious ambush, using hit-and-run tactics, but War Hawk boldly adopted a full encirclement strategy—five men against one hundred and fifty armed bandits. He suspected the enemy might even outnumber that. He wasn’t sure if this plan would work; something felt off, though he couldn’t say exactly what. Perhaps it was simply instinct.
Seeing no dissent from the team, Qin Feng kept his doubts to himself. It was difficult to suggest alternatives now, so he decided to proceed for the time being.
He settled into his hide, preparing for the fierce battle ahead. As the sniper, he was responsible for real-time intel and fire support. He focused on his duty, knowing that only by coordinating with the team could they succeed.
“Check headset communications,” War Hawk’s voice sounded in Qin Feng’s ear. The headset was working perfectly. Qin Feng replied, “Normal.”
The others quickly confirmed their communications were normal.
“We’re about to fight. When the enemy arrives, unleash maximum firepower. There are five of us; the enemy numbers a hundred and fifty. That’s thirty per person. Do you have confidence?” War Hawk asked calmly, his voice low. He sensed the battle was imminent; once the enemy came, they’d wipe them out. He had arranged the battlefield thoroughly and believed their tactics would work.
He was like a battle-hardened eagle, ever ready to fight and accomplish the mission.
“Confident,” came the replies. They had come for this mission, determined to fight fiercely, to display their formidable strength, and to complete their task. They believed they would ultimately succeed.
