Chapter Twenty-Nine: Let's See How He Performs!
At this moment, in the Satellite Surveillance Center of the Tiger Commando Battalion.
“Captain, Number 59—he actually killed the giant serpent. It’s truly unbelievable…” The soldier responsible for monitoring Qin Feng’s movements stared at the screen in astonishment, his face full of disbelief.
The captain glanced at Qin Feng on the monitor, a slight smile appearing on his lips as he spoke. “Indeed, this soldier is exceptional. To respond so swiftly in such a perilous situation and ultimately resolve the danger—this level of composure and calm isn’t something just any soldier possesses. Very impressive.”
“He’s performed a miracle. It’s astonishing,” remarked the lieutenant beside him, still visibly shaken by what he’d just witnessed on the screen.
“Yes, he’s performed a miracle,” the captain agreed, though he couldn’t shake the feeling that Qin Feng was somehow familiar, as if he’d seen him before, though where exactly he couldn’t recall at that moment.
“Captain, should we still send the rescue helicopter?” the monitoring soldier asked, turning to the captain.
“No need. Recall the helicopter,” the captain replied with a gentle smile. “That soldier has performed a miracle. Now, let’s see if he can withstand the various assessments and persevere until the end. The Tiger Commando only selects the strongest for its special forces.”
The soldier smiled without replying; he knew well the demands of the Tiger Commando’s selection process—anyone who passed was far from ordinary.
“This incident reminds us never to underestimate any soldier. Each one who comes to the special forces selection has tremendous potential. If they can tap into it, they’ll become true warriors. Keep tracking them and ensure the safety of every soldier in the assessment,” the captain instructed, turning his attention to the other monitors.
Meanwhile, Qin Feng had found another treetop. After confirming the area was safe, he climbed up and used some freshly-cut vines to tie himself securely to the branches, preparing to rest.
He sensed a faint light around him and slowly opened his eyes to discover it was sunlight. Blinking a few times to protect his eyes, he carefully surveyed his surroundings and realized dawn had broken. It was morning. Swiftly untying the vines, he climbed down to the forest floor.
“Three days left,” Qin Feng murmured. After a night’s rest, his energy had improved, but he knew the situation remained dire. With only three days remaining, the jungle was filled with unknown dangers, and there could be other adversaries lurking. He needed to be vigilant to survive and ultimately become a special forces soldier.
After a simple rinse, he drank from his canteen to replenish his water, then continued moving through the jungle, knowing he couldn’t stay in one place too long. If the enemy found him, he’d be eliminated.
He also needed to find food, but a quick check revealed nothing edible nearby.
After about half an hour, Qin Feng managed to catch a wild chicken in the jungle, which he ate raw. Once finished, he pressed on, knowing that survival in this jungle was the only path to becoming a special forces soldier.
Suddenly—
Rat-a-tat-tat!
Bang, bang! Boom!
After over an hour trekking through the forest, Qin Feng heard a sudden burst of gunfire and the explosion of grenades. The intensity of the sounds made it feel as if he were in the midst of a fierce battlefield.
With such violent fighting, it was certain that some had already been “killed.”
“Nine o’clock direction, about one and a half kilometers away.” Qin Feng listened intently, quickly pinpointing the direction and distance of the gunfire.
“No need to go there. The battle must be vicious,” he thought to himself. He knew he needed to keep his cool—just as he had the previous night. That area was a chaotic melee; by the time he arrived, the fight could be over, and stray bullets could easily lead to his elimination.
Now, his priority was survival. “In a jungle survival assessment, survival itself is the most important thing—not the assessment,” Qin Feng said, his eyes resolute as he continued to move stealthily through the forest.
Back at the Tiger Commando Battalion Satellite Surveillance Room.
“I didn’t expect it, but this kid is the first to understand the real purpose of the jungle assessment,” the captain remarked with a small smile. He was impressed by Qin Feng’s insight—realizing so quickly the true aim of the jungle trial.
“Indeed, this kid is remarkable. He has a good chance of passing the selection. If he makes it, I’d like to teach him hand-to-hand combat myself,” the lieutenant said, convinced that Qin Feng was full of untapped potential—a fine candidate for special forces.
“He shows great promise, but it’s still too early to say. Let’s wait for the final results and see which thirty will remain,” the captain replied. In the Tiger Commando Battalion, only the strong could survive; those without real ability would be eliminated. Their flexible elimination system ensured only the best were chosen.
“Perhaps this kid will be among them,” the lieutenant mused.
“We’ll see how he performs,” said the captain.
Time slipped by, and soon it was midday. Suddenly, with a loud rumble, rain began to pour without warning. The entire jungle became shrouded in a misty white, the relentless autumn rain bringing a biting chill. Cold winds swept through the forest, intensifying the sense of cold and danger.
Qin Feng trudged through the downpour. The cold rain sapped energy and could easily lead to sickness—a dangerous prospect in this perilous jungle. He kept moving to generate warmth and preserve his strength.
The rain fell without pause, lasting the entire afternoon. By evening it finally stopped. The sun emerged, painting the sky with brilliant sunset hues, making the jungle appear breathtakingly beautiful.
Qin Feng gazed above the canopy, marveling at the rare sight of such a vivid sunset. Just then, he noticed something colorful fluttering through the air, as radiant as the morning glow.
“Danger.” Suddenly, an intense sense of peril surged through him, and he dodged swiftly.
The rainbow-hued creature swooped down, brushing against a thumb-sized snake on a tree. In an instant, the snake was dead, dropping lifelessly to the ground.
“What is that?” Qin Feng peered closer, only to recoil in shock. It was a rainbow venom butterfly. In the jungle, the more vividly colored a creature, the more poisonous it tended to be. He recognized the deadly butterfly at once. Fortunately, his quick reaction had saved him; otherwise, he would not have survived.
“This place is far too dangerous,” Qin Feng thought. He reminded himself to be ever more cautious. Regaining his composure, he pressed onward into the unknown depths of the jungle.
