Chapter 15: He Anticipated My Anticipation
"You... you...!" Sister Chen pointed at Su Chengzi, her hand trembling uncontrollably, nearly beside herself with rage.
The other executives of Radiant Sun Entertainment also frowned. A middle-aged man spoke in a low voice, "Li Wanbai, is this the person you brought along? Truly lacking in manners and refinement! You call her your personal assistant, but in fact, she’s just someone here to apply for a job, and yet she’s so rude. Someone like this cannot be your assistant! We're saying this for your own good—you must listen and have her leave at once! With someone like that by your side, every word and deed represents you. If she causes any trouble and word gets out, it’s your reputation and public image that will suffer!"
"So I still have reputation and public image left to lose?" Li Wanbai replied with a smile. "All I’ve seen online these days is abuse and insults. I thought I’d lost those things long ago."
Her words left the other higher-ups of Radiant Sun Entertainment speechless, their retorts stuck in their throats.
Yu Baichuan glanced up at her, his eyes filled with a tangle of emotions.
Su Chengzi let out a quiet cough, signaling to Yu Baichuan. He immediately understood and remarked blandly, "I didn’t expect Radiant Sun Entertainment to have such an interesting assistant. How amusing. Let her stay and listen; after all, this concerns her master."
Damn it! Who still uses words like ‘master’ these days? People might think you’re stuck in the feudal era! Su Chengzi opened her mouth to scold him, but held back, remembering he was one of their own. If not for that, Yu Baichuan would surely have been thoroughly berated by now.
As Li Wanbai took her seat, she gave Su Chengzi a thumbs up.
Impressive, sister—you’re just as sharp as ever, maybe even sharper!
Su Chengzi gave a light snort and seated herself beside her.
The others could only seethe in silence. Even as Su Chengzi belittled their star manager and openly expressed disdain for Radiant Sun Entertainment, leaving them fuming and helpless, none dared speak out. They were unaware that Yu Baichuan, Su Chengzi, and Li Wanbai had grown up together, but since Yu Baichuan had spoken up in her favor, it was clearly an endorsement.
If Radiant Sun Entertainment still tried to force Su Chengzi out now, it would be a direct affront to Yu Baichuan. They could do nothing but grit their teeth and endure.
Su Chengzi sat upright, blocking most of the hostile gazes directed at Li Wanbai, adopting a protective stance.
Unaware of this, Li Wanbai slouched completely in her chair, her eyes fixed on Yu Baichuan with undisguised admiration.
Handsome! Truly worthy of being her campus idol—only a face like his could match the image of her ideal lover.
Unfortunately, Yu Baichuan’s gaze never landed on her for even a second; he was engrossed in discussing the show’s script with Radiant Sun Entertainment’s leadership.
The variety show "Us" had an extremely short recording schedule—just four days for four episodes. If it had been an ordinary show, it would never have made a ripple, let alone attracted Yu Baichuan and Li Wanbai.
Just as some dramas drag out their episode count, releasing only a few each week to keep viewers' anticipation high and ensure steady viewership and buzz, a show with only four episodes, no matter how they stretched it, would naturally struggle to generate lasting excitement. Unless, that is, it took an unconventional route—which "Us" did, by opting for a live broadcast format.
Live broadcasting is fraught with potential pitfalls.
Radiant Sun Entertainment and the Haya Group were the primary investors in "Us"; otherwise, it would have been impossible to secure the attendance of both companies’ leading figures. They needed to rigorously control every potential point of failure during the live broadcast, ideally preempting any mishaps. A single error could lead to a cascade of problems, possibly causing the entire program to be pulled, which would result in significant losses.
The two sides first discussed the recording venue. Suddenly, the CEO of Radiant Sun Entertainment shifted the topic, asking, "By the way, President Yu, are you comfortable with this?"
The abruptness of the question left even Yu Baichuan momentarily at a loss.
Xu Tu quickly interjected, "President Zhang, what do you mean? Comfortable with what?"
"I mean, are you comfortable recording a variety show with our Wanbai?" President Zhang maintained his ever-present smile.
Unexpectedly, it was not Li Wanbai or Yu Baichuan who spoke first, but Ye Xiruo, who blurted out, "Why wouldn’t Mr. Yu be comfortable? Mr. Yu and our Xiaobai are husband and wife! Doing a show together is practically a publicly funded honeymoon!"
"But I heard the two of you are getting a divorce."
Su Chengzi snorted.
Li Wanbai shook her head. "That’s not true."
Don’t talk nonsense. I haven’t even won him over yet, and you’re sending us back to the starting line with one sentence.
"Don’t worry, it won’t affect the recording. I’m always patient with your company’s artists—otherwise, I wouldn’t have let you bleed me dry for so long," Yu Baichuan replied softly.
He didn’t deny the divorce rumors—after all, to him, they were true.
If not now, it would only be a matter of time.
Li Wanbai, well aware of his thoughts, sighed inwardly. It seemed her journey to win him back would be long and arduous.
When the meeting ended and the others gradually left, Li Wanbai stayed behind, patiently waiting as Yu Baichuan and his team gathered their documents.
By chance, it was only after everyone else had departed that Yu Baichuan finished tidying up. He looked over at her. "Is there something you want?"
"Yes, yes," Li Wanbai nodded eagerly. "I wanted to explain... I—"
"Is your explanation still that you’ve lost the past ten years of your memory? Such a childish excuse?"
Li Wanbai was instantly silenced. He’d anticipated her every move, beating her to the punch.
He was saying exactly what she meant to say!
"To try to erase everything that happened in the past ten years with such a flimsy pretext—only you would attempt something like that," Yu Baichuan said coolly.
"But I really did lose those ten years—I’m not lying! I don’t even know why we got married, or why we’re getting divorced," Li Wanbai replied in a low voice.
Xu Tu bowed his head, pretending to be invisible—a quail playing deaf and blind, not daring to get involved in his boss’s marital affairs.
Su Chengzi stood by the conference room door, keeping watch for them, but said nothing.
For a moment, a strange silence settled over the entire room.
"I don’t understand—what exactly are you trying to do?"
After a long pause, Yu Baichuan’s voice was soft and distant, drifting into Li Wanbai’s ears like a breeze. "I’ve received your explanation. The divorce papers will be delivered to your residence in three days."
As he spoke, he stood and strode quickly toward the door, Xu Tu hurrying after in alarm.
Li Wanbai shouted after him, "You still don’t believe me!"
"Does it really matter whether I believe you or not?"
