Chapter 14: God of Men, We Meet Again
Su Orange unleashed her full firepower, leaving Ye Xi weak and at a loss for words, utterly dumbfounded. Even Wang Xing, standing nearby, was not spared: “You’ve already been fired, so stop shamelessly criticizing me, an outsider. Let me make it clear: I’m here to be your company’s new assistant. If you think about it, you’re the real outsider here! You’ve been dismissed, yet you’re still hanging around, even trying to use the company’s resources to curry favor with others. Are you out of your mind? Get lost—go as far away as you possibly can!”
“How lively!” A man’s voice, filled with amusement, drifted over from the other side. Everyone present instinctively looked up.
He wore a dark blue suit, gold-rimmed round glasses perched on his nose, his head cocked to the side as he smiled at them.
“And you are?” Li Wanbai asked curiously.
The man’s smile faltered for a split second. He adjusted his glasses, a hint of heartache in his tone. “Madam, good morning. I’m delighted to have the chance to introduce myself to you once again. My name is Xu Tu, secretary general to Yu Baichuan—Boss Yu, your husband.”
Li Wanbai’s gaze flickered as she offered an apologetic smile. So, it was an old acquaintance after all.
His words, “delighted to introduce myself to you once again,” made it clear they’d met before. Thinking about it, that made sense. As secretary general to Yu Baichuan, he must have a certain standing, probably often dealing with matters between the two of them.
You might not believe it, but I genuinely don’t remember you. It’s not that I intentionally forgot your name!
Xu Tu would never believe that.
The sympathy and heartache in his eyes weren’t for Li Wanbai, but for his boss.
Look at that—look at that. You still have lingering feelings for her, and she doesn’t even remember your right-hand man! If she’s like this with me, she’s probably not much better with the boss.
Ye Xi quickly composed herself and smiled. “Secretary Xu, what brings you here? And if you’re here, does that mean Mr. Yu is as well…?”
Xu Tu maintained his polite smile. “Miss Ye, what does it matter whether our boss is here at Sunny Entertainment? I thought I could represent Haya in these negotiations, but it seems you don’t see it that way?”
Ye Xi’s face changed, and she forced a smile. “Of course not! Everyone knows a talent like Secretary Xu at Mr. Yu’s side is more than qualified to represent Haya. I was only making casual conversation—please don’t take it seriously.”
So this is what it means to bully the weak and fear the strong.
Li Wanbai was amazed; as soon as Ye Xi saw Xu Tu, her bravado vanished. In terms of social status, Ye Xi was a rising star in the entertainment industry, while Xu Tu was just Yu Baichuan’s secretary. Yet Ye Xi didn’t dare cross him, not even uttering a harsh word.
“So Yu Baichuan really isn’t here?” Li Wanbai sounded disappointed. She’d hoped to start the clarification process early, but it seemed she’d have to wait until the variety show “Us” began filming.
Xu Tu, who had just been stern with Ye Xi, immediately brightened at Li Wanbai’s question. “He’s here, of course! If you want to see our boss, he’ll always be here for you! To be honest, Madam, we’re here today to discuss matters regarding the recording of ‘Us’ with Sunny Entertainment. Normally, our boss wouldn’t need to handle such small tasks in person, but he has a habit: anything related to Sunny Entertainment, he insists on overseeing himself—just so he can see you a few more times! In fact, he’s waiting for you both in the conference room. Even if he weren’t here, one word from you and he’d fly over immediately!”
Li Wanbai’s ears flushed slightly as she smiled and nodded. Once, Yu Baichuan truly had loved her.
The Li Wanbai of ten years ago would want her future self to know this.
What on earth had happened to bring their marriage to an end?
Li Wanbai knew better than anyone how deeply she loved Yu Baichuan. She could never have done something like cheating. If it had been such a fundamental betrayal, Yu Baichuan would have divorced her long ago, rather than letting things drag on for ten years. There must have been something else.
Perhaps today she would finally learn the truth.
Li Wanbai, Su Orange, and Ye Xi followed Xu Tu to the top-floor conference room. As for Wang Xing, he simply didn’t have the standing to join them.
Su Orange hadn’t forgotten him, though. As she left, she pulled a face at him. “Pack up and get out! If I were you, fired by the company, I’d be too ashamed to stay a second longer!”
The words stung, leaving Wang Xing so furious he was still stomping his feet as the elevator doors closed.
The group arrived at the top-floor conference room, now filled with Sunny Entertainment’s upper management—and, at the head of the table, Yu Baichuan himself.
The moment Li Wanbai pushed open the door, she felt a scorching gaze fixed upon her. She looked up, but saw only Yu Baichuan with his head lowered.
“You’re finally here!” Sister Chen breathed a sigh of relief and quickly stood up. “Hurry and find a seat—Director Yu and the others have been waiting for you two!”
Her gaze fell on Su Orange, and her face went momentarily blank. “You? What are you doing here?—You’re an outsider! Who let you in? Leave now—this isn’t the place for you!”
“It’s like this, Sister Chen. I need an assistant and I want Su Orange to work with me,” Li Wanbai replied honestly.
Sister Shen hadn’t had a chance to speak, but Su Orange sneered. “And who asked for your opinion, you tacky agent?”
“Who are you calling a tacky agent?” Sister Chen was stunned, furious beyond words.
She managed both Li Wanbai and Ye Xi—the two stars of Sunny Entertainment. Among all the company’s agents, none had brought up a top celebrity and a rising star like her. She was, without exaggeration, the company’s ace agent.
Never before had anyone dared call her a tacky agent to her face.
“What, no one’s ever said that to you? Then people really are too timid! Isn’t that exactly what you are? Besides making your artists the target of public scorn to chase popularity, do you have any other tricks for making stars?” Su Orange scoffed, utterly relentless.
Li Wanbai stared, speechless. Sister, do you realize what situation you’re in? You’re standing in their headquarters’ headquarters, cursing their top agent to her face. Isn’t that a bit too bold? I’m seriously worried you won’t make it out of this building!
Li Wanbai subtly edged closer to Su Orange.
