Chapter 13: What? I Don’t Understand
Su Orange sneered coldly, “And who do you think you are? If you want to help someone, first take a good look at yourself and see if you have what it takes. If you had a car of your own, you could give a ride to whoever you please, but is this car yours? Do you have the right to drive it? Are you even qualified?”
Ye Xi’s gentle smile remained, “Miss Su, I’m afraid you’re mistaken. Wang Xing is Li Wanbai’s exclusive chauffeur, which entitles him to drive the company’s vehicle. In fact, though the car is nominally assigned to Xiao Bai, the only person qualified to drive it is Wang Xing.”
As her words fell, Wang Xing’s face flickered with discomfort before he raised his voice, “I’m not qualified? Then do you, an outsider, have the right? This is Sunlight Entertainment—what does it have to do with you? If you don’t belong here, then leave and stop being an eyesore!”
“You said yourself that Wang Xing is qualified—on the premise that he’s Li Wanbai’s exclusive driver. But what right does a driver who’s been fired have to drive?” Su Orange nudged Li Wanbai with her elbow. “What are you standing there for? Hurry up and join the fight!”
Li Wanbai’s attention was clearly elsewhere. She gazed at Ye Xi in amazement, “You actually have four exclusive drivers? That’s impressive.”
She herself only had one, and it was someone like Wang Xing.
Ye Xi faltered, clearly unprepared for such a response. She forced an awkward smile, at a loss.
After her astonishment, Li Wanbai smiled, “Duo Duo is right. His qualification comes from being my chauffeur. Now that I’ve dismissed him, he no longer has that right.”
Wang Xing was furious. “Li Wanbai, you’re a public figure! How can you be so unreasonable and domineering? What gives you the right to fire me? Who do you think you are?”
Ye Xi nodded in agreement at the side. “Xiao Bai, I have to say, as a celebrity, you should be more mindful of your words and actions. You’re so popular now—how can you not understand such basic principles? Wang Xing was assigned to you by the company. No matter what happened, you should have tolerated it. How could you just fire him on a whim? What will the company say? If this gets out, people who know the truth might say Wang Xing offended you by saying the wrong thing, but those who don’t might think you’re capricious and hard to please. Think about it.”
Upon hearing this, Wang Xing glanced at Ye Xi with gratitude, then looked at Li Wanbai with undisguised disgust. “Miss Ye is so considerate and clever. I really can’t understand why the company chose someone as useless as you to be its face.”
“And why else? Clearly, it’s because I’m prettier than your so-called Miss Ye,” Li Wanbai replied with a sweet smile. “Isn’t that right, Xi Ruo?”
Being called out, Ye Xi’s expression stiffened. Being less beautiful than Li Wanbai had always been her obsession. Her own face was scarred by countless surgeries, and to have Li Wanbai expose this directly made a flash of resentment cross her face, though it quickly vanished. She smiled and nodded. “That’s right. Xiao Bai is the company’s face precisely because of her stunning beauty.”
Su Orange shot her a glare. “What, so you’re saying that Xiao Bai is good for nothing except her looks?”
“I didn’t say that, Miss Su. Don’t take things so personally—why so sensitive? If you’re too difficult, no man will want you.” Ye Xi smiled sweetly. “Xiao Bai is already married to Mr. Yu, but Miss Su, you don’t even have a boyfriend, do you? Don’t tell me you’re also into Mr. Yu’s type? Let me just say, there are hardly any men in the world as outstanding as he is. If that’s your standard, you’ll probably die alone.”
“What’s it to you?” Before Su Orange could explode, Li Wanbai cut in, “Whether Duo Duo likes someone like Yu Baichuan is none of your business. Whether she has a boyfriend is none of your business. If I fire my own driver, it’s none of your business. Xi Ruo, don’t meddle so much in other people’s affairs, or you might not live long.”
Ye Xi was left speechless, rooted to the spot. Never before had Li Wanbai spoken to her so bluntly. Normally, even if not flattering, she would at least be polite—after all, Ye Xi still held certain leverage...
Thinking of this, Ye Xi forced a smile. “Xiao Bai, when did you become so sharp-tongued? That’s a good thing. Mu Sang and I used to worry every day you’d be bullied by online haters and not know how to fight back. Looks like we worried for nothing. If I tell Mu Sang about this, he’ll be happy for you.”
Her words carried a veiled threat.
Li Wanbai looked utterly baffled. “Go ahead and tell him if you want.”
Mu Sang? Who was that? She had no idea.
Ye Xi was left standing there, completely at a loss. What was going on? Things were completely out of her control.
In the past, just mentioning Mu Sang would make Li Wanbai behave. Ye Xi had even mocked her for preferring Mu Sang over Yu Baichuan, when she could have had both, yet insisted on making a choice—utterly foolish.
What was happening now? Had she changed?
“Xiao Bai, are you still mad at Mu Sang? I heard what happened. He really didn’t mean to trigger your pollen allergy. If you ask me, it was mostly your fault. Why didn’t you say you were allergic to pollen?”
Ye Xi looked at Li Wanbai, disappointed. “You don’t know how hard Mu Sang tried to make you happy—he went to so many flower shops just to pick the freshest, most fragrant roses. But you had an allergic reaction and fainted in front of him. Do you know how upset Mu Sang was? And you never once apologized.”
Li Wanbai laughed in exasperation. “So you’re saying, he caused my allergy, and I’m the one who should apologize? Please, pretty lady, is there something wrong with your head?”
She resented her own weakness for beauty—looking at Ye Xi’s lovely, gentle face, this was all she could say.
This was when the value of a reliable ally became clear.
Su Orange cursed loudly, “Are you deaf or just stupid? She already said she doesn’t know Mu Sang—doesn’t know him! Take your sissy boy and get lost as far away as you can, and stop bothering our Xiao Bai!
“And another thing—do you have no brain, no heart, no ears, or no eyes? After everything you’ve heard, you still don’t get it? Mu Sang showed up with a bunch of gaudy, cliché roses from some cheap flower shop, and forced his way over even when I told him Xiao Bai was allergic. She ended up in the hospital! How is that not his fault? You want him not to apologize and expect Xiao Bai to say sorry? That’s nonsense!”
