“Fluffball, tell me, if someone were to discover that my soul isn't native to this world, what might happen to me?” As Chao Xu pondered the differences between herself and the average person here, she inhaled the scent of the little ball of fur.

[The technological development in this world is still rather primitive. If someone found out that a foreign soul was inhabiting a body... Master, you might very well be hauled away to be dissected and sliced up.] The furball, battered into a puddle, replied.

Dissection, huh...

Chao Xu glanced at her wrist, pale and almost translucent under the sunlight, and sighed.

This body, if nothing else, certainly meets her aesthetic standards. Therefore, if only for the sake of maintaining her appearance, she must try to avoid the fate of dissection.

She definitely had no desire for a formaldehyde bath.

Absentmindedly chewing her thumb, Chao Xu began to contemplate how she might bring her scores down to match the average of the middle tier.

Lost in her own musings, class bells rang and faded, teachers came and went in waves.

Not everyone was as hypocritical as Lu Yuehong, or as arrogant and trouble-loving as Zhu Mu.

Most of the teachers, while lacking extra expressions, were at least dutiful enough. Seeing Chao Xu sitting alone, lost in thought, they feared causing trouble and kept their silence.

When the bell rang again, signaling the end of class, Chao Xu noticed everyone around her had already stood up, and only then remembered it was time to go home.

For some reason, the image of Ci Mo surfaced hazily in her mind, leaving her restless. She scattered the daydream from her thoughts and prepared to leave.

The car sent by the Chao family was parked outside, waiting to pick her up.

But as Chao Xu was about to head out, she noticed that Shen Lu, who should have left ahead of her, was still wandering with her backpack, her gaze unsettled.

Something was off.

Yet, it was hard to pinpoint exactly what. The sight unsettled Chao Xu for reasons she couldn’t quite explain.

Her stomach was rumbling with hunger, and she hadn’t intended to get involved with Shen Lu any further. But as she turned to leave, she caught sight of Shen Lu’s right hand, endlessly rubbing at the wristwatch, her eyes full of hesitance.

Thanks to her keen eyesight, Chao Xu immediately recognized the watch Shen Lu was touching—it was the one that had belonged to the original owner.

Chao Xu was naturally indifferent.

Yet that watch, though unrelated to her personally, always managed to stir an itch in her heart.

She couldn’t explain why, but the watch seemed to hold some secret, beckoning her to uncover it.

Halting, her curiosity eclipsing her hunger, Chao Xu turned and strode over, her long legs carrying her neatly in front of Shen Lu.

“Ah—Chao Si, what are you doing here?” Shen Lu, clutching something that wasn’t hers, was already feeling guilty. At the sight of the face so closely resembling that foolish girl’s, she instinctively let out a terse cry.

Chao Xu saw her unease but said nothing, reaching out a finger to flick the watch on Shen Lu’s wrist, smiling faintly. “You're still wearing that watch, I see.”

Though she hadn’t uttered a single insult, the curve in her eyes, empty of all mirth, made Shen Lu feel a humiliation she’d never experienced before.

She tried to pull her wrist back, only to find Chao Xu’s grip was like an iron clamp, holding her fast.

Unable to break free, Shen Lu’s face reddened as she forced herself to meet the cold gaze. “This watch was mine to begin with. I’d appreciate it if you showed some respect!”
