Chapter Twenty-One: Slaying the Wind Wolf Leader, Obtaining a Demonic Core
"Although the Wind Wolf Leader is of a higher level and can unleash wind blades, the Raven Warriors are numerous and agile!" Observing the scene, Yang Feng couldn't help but mutter to himself.
The enormous size of the Wind Wolf Leader brought an overwhelming sense of oppression. Yet, precisely because of its bulk, its speed was hampered. Its defenses, too, were not particularly formidable. Faced with the relentless assaults from dozens of Raven Warriors, it simply could not withstand the onslaught. The outcome was entirely predictable; after just over a dozen minutes, the Wind Wolf Leader was gasping its last breaths.
A mournful howl rang out at this critical moment, the Wind Wolf Leader letting loose a furious roar. It began to unleash its skills with a wild desperation, this time pouring all its remaining strength into the effort. The wind blade ability was pushed to its very limits. Countless blades of wind spewed from its maw, slicing through the air and sending dozens of Raven Warriors flying.
"This wind blade skill looks quite impressive," Yang Feng remarked, his face expressionless as he watched the Raven Warriors flung aside. Although struck by the blades, the Raven Warriors suffered little actual harm. After spiraling backward a few meters, they dove once more at their quarry.
Seeing this, the Wind Wolf Leader immediately turned to flee.
"...It ran away?" Yang Feng was momentarily stunned. He had never imagined the Wind Wolf Leader would retreat.
As it fled, the Wind Wolf Leader howled repeatedly.
Howl after howl echoed through the surroundings. At that moment, answering cries rose from all around.
Yang Feng sensed something was amiss and refrained from sending the Raven Warriors in pursuit. Instead, he ordered them to withdraw and form a protective circle about him.
The howling continued, building into a chorus.
Just then, from the shadows of abandoned buildings all around, Wind Wolves began to emerge—one after another.
[Wind Wolf]
[Level: 13]
[Number: 500]
In the blink of an eye, five hundred Wind Wolves appeared before him. The sheer number alone was enough to send chills down one's spine.
Yet Yang Feng showed no trace of fear. Though numerous, these Wind Wolves were not particularly powerful; his Raven Warriors should be able to cope.
At the same time, a question occurred to him: How did others deal with such a horde of Wind Wolves? Yang Feng doubted that even a team of four could slaughter so many at once.
He glanced around at the environment and suddenly understood. Though the houses were all occupied by Wind Wolves, under normal circumstances, the wolves would not leave their shelters without provocation. Thus, other players would never face such a siege—at most, perhaps a hundred wolves at once. This was due to Yang Feng having driven away the Wind Wolf Leader and having cleared out the wolves along the way.
It was his first time in Greenhill Town, so he knew little of this dungeon. Besides, the teachers at school had never specifically covered it. Even so, had he known, Yang Feng would have made the same choices. After all, these Wind Wolves were all sources of experience; how could he let such an opportunity slip by? The greater the danger, the greater the reward.
Since entering Greenhill Town, Yang Feng had not fought a single battle. His clothes remained spotless and clean. In his eyes, these Wind Wolves were nothing but experience points.
The Raven Warriors circled above his head, shielding him.
Soon, the Wind Wolves launched their assault. In short order, several hundred Wind Wolves were locked in battle with dozens of Raven Warriors. The wolves were ferocious, striking with claws and sharp teeth. But as the Raven Warriors fought from the air, the wolves could do little real harm.
Seeing this, Yang Feng joined the fray, casting a fireball at one of the wolves. A massive ball of flame crashed into its body.
The wolf let out a pained howl and collapsed in a pool of blood.
[Killed Level 13 Wind Wolf. Experience +2000.]
[Obtained: Wolf Fang!]
A slight smile curved Yang Feng’s lips. He conjured even more fireballs.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
One after another, fireballs rained down. Not a single Wind Wolf could withstand them. Each struck wolf burst into flames, filling the air with the mouthwatering aroma of roasted meat.
[Killed Wind Wolf. Experience +2000.]
[Obtained: Wolf Fang!]
[Killed Wind Wolf. Experience +2000.]
[Obtained: Wolf Fang!]
[Killed Level 13 Wind Wolf. Experience +2000.]
[Obtained: Wolf Bone!]
...
In an instant, a cascade of notifications echoed in Yang Feng’s mind. His experience bar soared, rising from fifty to eighty percent in mere minutes—a staggering thirty percent increase in so short a time.
Yang Feng could not help but be astonished. The fireball spell was simply terrifying in its power! He wondered how his spell compared to a real mage’s.
At that moment, the Wind Wolf Leader returned, dread plain on its face. In just a few minutes, most of its underlings had perished.
"Die!" Yang Feng shouted as he spotted the Wind Wolf Leader, wasting no time as he unleashed another fireball.
With a thunderous explosion, a gigantic fireball struck the Wind Wolf Leader. It howled in agony, its body ravaged by severe burns. Its fur was gone, its skin scorched and blackened.
Uttering a final, unwilling cry, the Wind Wolf Leader collapsed to the ground. Already wounded, it could not withstand Yang Feng’s fireball.
[Killed Wind Wolf Leader. Experience +10,000.]
[Congratulations! Obtained: Wolf Pelt!]
[Obtained: Low-Grade Demon Core!]
"Who would have thought killing a Wind Wolf Leader would yield ten thousand experience!" Yang Feng exclaimed. As expected of a mini-boss, the Wind Wolf Leader’s death granted him a windfall of experience.
More importantly, dungeon bosses typically dropped items upon death. The Wind Wolf Leader’s pelt was a material prized by weapon forgers; even in the trade hall, it would fetch a handsome sum. As for the demon core, it could be used in alchemy or forging. Normally, only boss-level monsters produced demon cores, and even then, they were not guaranteed to drop. Thus, demon cores were always in high demand at the trading hall.
