Chapter Sixty-Nine: Turning the Tables, the Daring Assault on the Kunpeng
"Instinct."
Chen Yi's words left everyone momentarily stunned.
He had always been logical and well-reasoned, yet now he spoke of relying on instinct. This could only mean that they had truly reached a dead end.
In truth, Chen Yi felt confident within. Though troubles beset them on every side, they were far from utter despair.
The current wave of S-class zombies was pale blue in hue, and compared to the previous batch, these were less intelligent and not adept at critical thought. Therefore, what they needed to do was to lure them away with the very things they obsessively sought.
Turning, Chen Yi gazed at everyone gathered, then surveyed the surrounding environment. For a moment, even he felt lost.
Suddenly, a small elderly man in the crowd rose abruptly, his lips trembling. He stammered and roared, shrinking away as he moved backward.
Sensing something amiss, Chen Yi immediately called out, "Sir, what's wrong?"
"I... I can't stay here any longer. I want to go home. I have to leave!"
Without another word, the old man ran off.
Lu Kai, Hu Sanhan, and the others remained motionless, for Chen Yi’s gun was trained on them all.
"You're too cold-blooded!"
A man among the group could no longer contain his protest. "If you let him go like this, he'll die for sure. We should—"
He never finished his sentence. The old man who had leapt from behind the defensive rocks was instantly torn apart by zombies, not even getting the chance to reach the warship by the shore. He died just like that.
In his final moments, everyone could see the old man raising his hand high, until even that was devoured entirely.
Witnessing the bloody spectacle, the protesting man began to tremble all over. His earlier righteous indignation evaporated in an instant.
Chen Yi let out a cold laugh. "Go on, why don’t you finish what you were saying? Weren’t you eager to show off your courage? Then go down there!"
The man shrank back, his voice faltering. "I... I didn’t expect..."
"Foolish. Shallow."
Chen Yi rebuked him harshly. "Having joined our combat squad, you no longer have only your own life to worry about—everyone here shares the same fate. What we must do is face the slaughter with all our strength!"
"It's bad!" Chen Yaxi cried out.
"After devouring that man, the zombies are starting to shed their skins!"
Chen Yi and the others turned at the sound. Indeed, the horde of zombies at Kunpeng’s feet was changing. Previously, zombies’ bodies functioned at a primitive level, but now, after shedding their skins, they began to climb the rocks with astonishing speed.
As the zombies advanced, so too did Kunpeng, clearly having noticed the group’s hiding place. The colossal beast began to shift its massive body.
"Damn it!" Seeing the zombies and Kunpeng converging, Chen Yi immediately led everyone to climb higher up the mountain.
Yet, at the sudden roar of thunder, Chen Yi halted in his tracks. While everyone wondered at his abrupt stop, Chu Yunxi began to tremble, her blood boiling within her veins.
It was here.
The second round of the Calamity Curse Disk had arrived.
As the enormous disk appeared, crimson light gathered upon both Kunpeng and the zombies. Chen Yi felt puzzled—was the offering this time Kunpeng and the zombies?
Yet after a long wait, nothing further happened to the light. Instead, the Calamity Curse Disk began to flicker uncertainly.
"Down you go!"
At that moment, a bald man attacked Chen Yi from behind without warning. Caught off guard, Chen Yi nearly fell into the midst of the zombies and Kunpeng.
"No!"
Chen Yaxi shouted in fury, darting forward to grab Chen Yi and pull him back to safety.
The man who had attacked was now trembling, unable to utter a word before Chen Yaxi kicked him off the cliff.
"No!"
His last desperate cry echoed as Kunpeng and the zombies devoured him.
At that same instant, the Calamity Curse Disk released dozens of beams of light, each striking Hu Sanhan, Chu Yunxi, Chen Yi, Chen Yaxi, Lu Kai, and several other robust team members.
As the disk vanished, Kunpeng and the zombies continued their furious howls.
Chen Yi quickly examined himself, but found nothing unusual. In contrast, Chu Yunxi, under the influence of the second round of the Calamity Curse Disk, awakened her Heavenly Eye.
After scrutinizing Kunpeng, Chu Yunxi informed Chen Yi that the creature’s weakness lay three inches below its abdomen, the very spot where the young Kunpeng was hidden. In other words, by attacking this area, they could draw all of Kunpeng’s attention there, allowing others to strike from elsewhere unnoticed.
"So that’s it!" Chen Yi exclaimed. He had wondered why the fierce Kunpeng acted with such caution—now he understood it was all for the sake of its offspring.
Just as everyone prepared to seize the opportunity, a mutated zombie suddenly sprouted wings and lunged at Chen Yaxi.
"Xiao Xi!"
Chu Yunxi cried out, and in the next instant, Chen Yaxi vanished before their eyes—only to reappear, safe and sound, in Hu Sanhan’s arms.
"Old Hu, who would’ve thought you’d be so lucky as to gain the power of instant teleportation!" Lu Kai exclaimed, still shaken—moments ago, the flying zombie had nearly killed Chen Yaxi in the blink of an eye.
"Thank you, Uncle Hu!" Chen Yaxi beamed sweetly at Hu Sanhan.
The burly man scratched his head, grinning awkwardly. "It’s nothing. Just doing what I should. Honestly, even I didn’t expect that ability to manifest!"
As they spoke, Chen Yi noticed the flying zombie pulling back, preparing for its next assault.
He gripped his twin-bladed sword tightly. The moment he prepared to throw it, the blades merged into a single, gleaming five-meter-long weapon.
As the flying zombie dived straight for him, Chen Yi roared, swinging the blade in his left hand without hesitation.
In an instant, blood gushed from the zombie as it lost all strength before their eyes.
The scent of blood drove Kunpeng into a frenzy. No longer concerned for the young one in its belly, it charged at Chen Yi at full speed.
But Chu Yunxi raised her musket, firing directly at Kunpeng’s vital spot.
With its abdomen wounded, Kunpeng dared not make another reckless move and hastily retreated.
Seeing the beast’s temporary withdrawal, Chen Yi and the others did not dare relax.
For flying zombies were not the only threat—above them, countless zombies of various colors had already begun to gather in the sky.
