At the prow of the ship, the man in the trench coat grew even more grim-faced.

Judging from the situation before him, the people on the island were far from a disorderly mob; they were, in fact, a well-formed unit.

“Captain!”

A soldier carrying a long-range artillery piece hurried to the man’s side, eager to make his suggestion. “What are we waiting for? Let’s strike first and gain the upper hand!”

“Shut up!” The man shot him a cold glance, then fixed his gaze on the unseen enemy hidden behind the mist.

“What do you know? To survive to this point in such dire circumstances, they must possess some remarkable abilities. Capturing the little girl is important, but that doesn’t mean we should act like fools and let ourselves be played with.”

“Yes, sir!” The soldier withdrew, not daring to speak further.

By now, Chen Yi had already seen through the enemy’s intentions. But prolonging the standoff would only increase the risk of death. The timing of the next wave of the dead was unpredictable—before they found themselves beset on all sides, they needed to finish this quickly.

Turning to Chen Yaxi, Chen Yi placed a steadying hand on her shoulder, his eyes serious. “Xiao Xi, I need your help with something. It’s a bit risky.”

“Brother, I’m not afraid!” Chen Yaxi grasped his hand obediently, flashing a bright smile. “You promised we’d survive together.”

Chen Yi nodded, then leaned in close to whisper in her ear, “Here’s what we’ll do…”

As she listened, her expression shifted from solemn, to excited, and finally to irrepressible confidence. “Don’t worry, leave it to me!”

At last, after half an hour with no movement from the other side, the man in the trench coat began to lose patience. He grabbed the loudspeaker and barked an order, but before he could finish, a figure shot skyward, then darted through the warship with lightning speed.

As the figure flashed past, the man watched in horror as his soldiers fell one by one.

“Defend! Fire at the sky!” he shouted.

But before he could act, Chen Yi lunged into the fray like a leopard, the twin blades in his hands reaping lives as easily as a scythe of death, cutting down a swath of enemies.

Only now did the man realize he had vastly underestimated this group—their thinking, their ability to act, all surpassed normal human limits.

A gunshot rang out.

In that instant of the man’s hesitation, Chen Yi leapt onto the deck. Chen Yaxi, seeing their first objective accomplished, quickly withdrew.

“Don’t move!” the man shouted, thinking she meant to escape, and drew his pistol.

The next moment, Chen Yi’s blade fell, severing the man’s left arm.

A pig-like scream tore from the man’s throat as the artillery soldier beside him spun to aim his weapon at Chen Yi.

“Courting death!” In a flash, the soldier’s face darkened, a thin line appearing across his throat before blood sprayed onto the captain’s body and the man collapsed.

Before the man could grasp what had happened, a cold dagger pressed to his neck.

“Tell your men to surrender now, or none of you will live!” Chen Yi ordered.

The man grit his teeth, feeling the blade bite deeper, a trickle of blood sliding down to stain his right hand.

“Wait!” he cried.

Chen Yi paused, just as he intended.

“Well? Have you figured out what to do? Speak—what’s your name? Who sent you?”

The man barely had time to answer when a fighter jet roared overhead and strafed him with gunfire.

He died on the spot.

“Damn!” On the shore, Hu Sanhan and Lu Kai, who had been watching the whole time, grew anxious. If the jet’s pilot had so decisively eliminated the trench coat man, it meant he was never the real power here.

Sure enough, hundreds of jets in the sky simultaneously trained their guns on Chen Yi and Chen Yaxi.

“Yaxi, come back!” At Chen Yi’s call, Yaxi, frustrated at having to abandon her next move, hurried to his side.

Just then, a deep voice boomed from among the jets. “Young man, you’re capable, but if you keep up this recklessness, I can’t guarantee your survival.”

Chen Yi snorted. “A coward hiding behind machines has no right to address me.”

At this, the other side showed a measure of sincerity. Dozens of jets split apart, making way for a single fighter emblazoned with an X.

This symbol could have many meanings, but Chen Yi sensed only arrogance—a declaration that the right to decide life and death was his alone.

Sure enough, a voice came from the X-marked fighter. “You’ve seen your true opponent, young man. Now, give me a clear answer. What will it take for you to back down?”

“Not an inch!” Chen Yi’s defiance utterly enraged the leader of the X Organization.

With a wave of his hand, the leader prepared to strike.

But just then, the sky erupted in a deafening roar.

From his observations, Chen Yi realized: a greater mutant attack was imminent.

“All units, withdraw at any cost!” Chen Yi swept Yaxi into his arms, bellowing to the others, “Don’t get bogged down! Use every smoke grenade—leave nothing behind!”

Hu Sanhan, Lu Kai, and the others moved swiftly, their actions instantly reversing the disadvantage.

Thick smoke filled the area, making it impossible for the jets above to track their targets below.

Chen Yi’s heart pounded with urgency. If they failed to retreat in time, an overwhelming assault awaited them.

“Captain, what now?” The pilot’s hands trembled on the controls.

“Useless!” the old man barked, smacking the pilot’s head. “You’re scared out of your wits by these little tricks? Pathetic!”

Yet as the old man reveled in his composure, the world itself seemed to drape in black—a curtain of darkness enveloped everything.

At the same moment, Chen Yi and his group lost all sense of direction.

Damn! Chen Yi clenched his teeth. Was he still too late?

At that desperate moment, the crystal cores he hadn’t yet absorbed flickered with faint light. Using this glimmer, Chen Yi shouted to those around him, “Follow me! Run as hard as you can! Don’t stop! Where there’s light, there’s hope!”

“Yes, boss, we’re with you!”
