Chapter Fifty-Six: The Sinister Octopus Monster!
Chen Yaxi’s flying shuttles pierced relentlessly, riddling the giant zombies with bloody holes. Yet they seemed oblivious to pain, continuing their ferocious assault. Seizing the opportunity, Chen Yi climbed onto one of the giant zombies’ backs, swiftly drawing his blades to slice open the back of its neck, then, with another motion, he severed its head. Blood spurted as the giant froze for a moment before toppling to the ground.
A thunderous crash sent thick dust swirling into the air. With one dispatched, Chen Yi used its body as leverage to leap onto another giant zombie, his dual blades dancing like butterflies, raining down a fresh storm of blood.
“Brother Hu, quickly dispose of these giant zombie corpses!” he shouted from atop the fallen behemoth. “Don’t let them mutate again!”
“Good work, kid. You’re fast enough,” Hu Sanhan said, wiping the blood from his shoulder and catching his breath.
“Brother, you’re so cool!” Chen Yaxi cheered from above, unable to contain her excitement at the scene unfolding below.
Before long, all the attacking giant zombies had been eliminated. But just as the group began to believe the crisis was over, a faint tremor rippled through the ground, as if something was writhing beneath their feet.
The tremor grew stronger, making the entire island seem to sway.
“Everyone, be careful!” Lu Kai shouted, instantly on alert.
The next instant, countless red tentacles burst from the earth, writhing and snaking towards them like living serpents, filling the air with a chilling, unnatural aura.
“What the hell is that?” Hu Sanhan stared wide-eyed at the approaching tentacles, shock written across his face.
“Fall back quickly—don’t let them grab you!” Chen Yi commanded, whirling his twin blades in an attempt to sever the red tentacles. But he found them uncommonly tough; his blades could not cut through them in a single stroke. Worse still, the tentacles seemed able to instantly regenerate, wrapping around anything in their path. They were fiendishly difficult to deal with.
“Brother, there are more and more of them!” Chen Yaxi shouted anxiously from above.
“Don’t panic, Xiaoxi, come back to me!” Chen Yi called.
Chen Yaxi returned to the ground, landing beside Chen Yi, but her face remained etched with worry. She folded her wings and looked to him. “Brother, what are these tentacles? What should we do?”
Chen Yi’s brows knitted as he stared at the writhing tentacles, a grim suspicion forming in his heart. “I suspect these are the result of a giant octopus beneath the sea mutating.”
“These tentacles aren’t just enormous—they can spit that green slime, which is probably corrosive,” he explained.
The group’s faces turned pale with fear.
Lu Kai gripped his weapon tightly, a flicker of panic in his eyes. “If this thing is so troublesome, can we even fight it?”
Hu Sanhan turned to Chen Yi, his calm voice tinged with urgency. “What now, brother? Should we retreat?”
After a moment’s thought, Chen Yi nodded. “Yes. Things are too complicated here. No matter how many supplies are on this island, it isn’t worth the risk. Let’s fall back for now.”
Hu Sanhan agreed. He raised his voice to rally the team. “Everyone, you heard him—fall back! Keep formation and don’t panic!”
Just as they prepared to retreat, several massive tentacles erupted from the shoreline, striking the naval ships with brutal force, as if trying to drag them back out to sea.
“This is bad!” Hu Sanhan roared. “These monsters aren’t letting us leave!”
A steely light flashed in Chen Yi’s eyes as he barked, “Xiaoxi, use your flying shuttles to cut those tentacles!”
“Understood!” Without hesitation, Chen Yaxi unfurled her wings and soared into the air, her hands gathering energy to summon the flying shuttles. In a flash, they formed and shot out, slicing through the tentacles.
A series of slicing sounds rang out as the tentacles were severed, spraying green slime everywhere. But the giant octopus seemed only further enraged—its tentacles thrashed more wildly, and the sea itself began to roil.
Seeing this, Chen Yi decided to change tactics. “This isn’t working—we have to take down the beast itself!”
Lu Kai hesitated. “But…”
“No buts!” Chen Yi’s gaze hardened. “If we must face it, then we fight!”
He also realized the creature’s core crystal must be incredibly powerful, perhaps capable of unlocking formidable genetic abilities. It would be a tremendous boon for their future survival.
Though risky, there was room for maneuver in this battle.
With Chen Yi’s unwavering resolve, the others agreed to follow his lead.
Hu Sanhan clapped Chen Yi’s shoulder. “Alright, you’re our commander-in-chief! Let’s do this!”
“I’ll cover you!” Chen Yaxi called from above.
Chen Yi nodded, gripped his twin blades, and pointed towards the mass of tentacles. “Lu Kai, you and your team distract the tentacles! Brother Hu, you’re with me—we’ll charge in and find the octopus’s main body!”
Lu Kai led his team in a furious barrage of gunfire and artillery, distracting the tentacles as best they could.
Meanwhile, Chen Yi and Hu Sanhan split up, advancing from both sides towards the monster’s core.
The tentacles multiplied, forcing Chen Yi and Hu Sanhan to hack ever faster. Chen Yi’s blades had severed countless tentacles, yet each one regenerated like wild grass—an unending tide.
“Damn it, these things can regenerate!” Hu Sanhan cursed, his golden greatsword coming down without mercy.
“Don’t stop!” Chen Yi replied coolly. “Keep attacking—we’ll find its weakness!”
With Chen Yaxi covering them from above, they gradually forced their way to the octopus’s body—a vast, slimy mass looming on the shore.
The monstrous octopus pulsed with an eerie green glow, its light like the eyes of a demon, sending chills through their veins.
“Look over there!” Hu Sanhan suddenly shouted. “Its heart—there’s something glittering—that must be the core crystal!”
Chen Yi’s eyes lit up. “Perfect. Let’s go for it!”
“Got it!”
Together, they surged forward, speeding straight for the glimmering spot.
The octopus sensed the threat—its tentacles lashed out with renewed frenzy, desperately trying to block their advance.
But with Chen Yaxi’s cover, they broke through the defenses, closing in on the monster’s heart.
Chen Yi gripped his twin blades, leapt high, and brought them down with all his strength on the crystal core.
The blades flashed as they plunged into the octopus’s heart.
With a deafening roar, green slime erupted, and the octopus’s body convulsed violently, unleashing an earth-shattering screech.
The core crystal shattered, and in that instant, the colossal body began to shrivel rapidly. The tentacles fell limp, their threat at last extinguished.
