Chapter Thirty-Two: A Brother’s Moment of Brilliance
At this moment, Viper was filled with despair. She saw her leader and teammate, Scorpion, both fall to Chen Yi’s blade. She realized that she would be next.
In terms of combat strength, she was the weakest among Madman’s subordinates. Though she had a few tricks up her sleeve, those were only truly effective in group fights. Alone, their power diminished several times over.
Rather than suffer a torturous end at Chen Yi’s hands, she decided to stop struggling altogether.
She gazed in Chen Yi’s direction, shaking her head helplessly, her eyes brimming with unwillingness. Secretly, she vowed, “In my next life, I will never trust a handsome man like him again.”
Gradually, the light in her eyes faded.
Chu Yunxi gave the order for her people to activate their “Golden Body” maneuver and finish it quickly.
Seeing the threat closing in, Viper made no move to resist. She was dispatched with a single, effortless stroke.
As she fell, she seemed to glimpse her life before the apocalypse—a world of calm and peace. Only then did she recall: how had she, in just a dozen or so days, transformed from a fourteen- or fifteen-year-old girl into a byword for malice?
She had not been this way, but the world’s twisted changes had left her no choice.
Perhaps death was true release; she felt a measure of relief.
Her fate ended in the desolate apocalypse.
Not far away, Chen Yi watched the scene unfold, unmoved.
To him, Viper’s end had long been sealed.
With her death, his gaze shifted. He quietly plotted his next move.
The giant zombie’s attacks pressed ever closer, each mighty stomp making the ground quake.
“Brother Hu, cover me!”
Chen Yi called out.
“Got it, brother. Be careful,” Hu Sanhan replied, frowning slightly as he gripped his golden broadsword.
Chen Yi leapt, agile as a panther, soaring through the air.
He carefully studied the giant zombie’s movements, waiting for the perfect moment.
The zombie, sensing the threat, suddenly covered its wounded eye with its hand.
If it suffered another blow from Chen Yi, it might not hold together.
But the moment Chen Yi saw this move, he adjusted his stance, kicked off the dented roof of a nearby car, and vaulted to one side.
In midair, he spun deftly, drawing close to the back of the zombie’s head.
A fierce gleam flashed in his eyes, and his twin-bladed sword swept down like a tiger pouncing from a mountain.
A wet, slicing sound rang out—a deep fissure split the giant zombie’s skull.
Yet it did not stop. Instead, it let out a deafening roar, its massive body shaking violently as if trying to throw Chen Yi off.
“Damn it, this thing is tough,” Chen Yi cursed inwardly, but he didn’t pause.
He gripped the zombie’s rough hide, pushing off for another strike at its skull—this blow even more forceful, meant to deepen the wound.
The giant zombie began to sway.
Blood gushed from the wound in torrents, turning the battlefield into a scene from hell.
Its thunderous roar exploded over the field like a clap of doom, leaving every ear ringing.
Chen Yi darted nimbly over its body, dodging the sweeping blows of its massive hands, ever ready to strike again.
The zombie thrashed wildly, trying to catch him.
Its claws tore through the firefight behind him, smashing debris and rubble, each blow a storm.
But Chen Yi moved with catlike agility, slipping past every attack.
He knew this creature was at the end of its rope—it needed only one last blow.
“Yunxi! Have everyone target its eyes!”
Chen Yi twisted around, shouting to Chu Yunxi behind the lines.
His voice cut through the battlefield din and reached her clearly.
“Understood!” she replied, eyes blazing.
She swiftly signaled her nearby teammates. “Ready! Target: the zombie’s eyes!”
“All units, unleash everything—no matter the cost!”
Her squad quickly shifted position, aiming at the giant zombie’s bleeding eyes.
Meanwhile, Chen Yi kept provoking the monster, drawing its focus.
Its attacks became even more furious, but for all their power, they could not land a hit on him.
Instead, the continued blood loss slowed its movements—its strength waning with every moment.
In the rear, Chu Yunxi took up a sniper rifle provided by Hu Sanhan’s team.
She peered through the scope, locking onto the wounded eye, adjusting her aim bit by bit.
A shot rang out, echoing across the burning battlefield—the bullet sliced through the air toward its mark.
But the giant zombie lunged to the side at that instant, evading the shot.
The bullet grazed its ear, tearing out a spray of blood.
“Damn, so close!” Chu Yunxi muttered, reloading and resetting her aim.
“Don’t worry, try again!” Chen Yi called out, encouraged by the near miss, keeping the monster’s attention firmly on himself.
The hail of bullets continued, tearing into the zombie’s flesh.
Suddenly, another shot rang out—from the flank.
This time, the bullet hit true, punching cleanly through the zombie’s eye.
A bloodcurdling shriek burst from its throat—its towering frame froze in place.
For one breathless moment, the battlefield seemed to fall silent.
“Bullseye!” Chen Yi’s eyes lit up as he looked toward the shooter, satisfaction blooming across his face.
At a lookout spot, Lu Kai jumped excitedly, waving his sniper rifle and shouting to Chen Yi, “I hit it!”
“Nicely done, Kai!” Chen Yi called back, genuinely pleased for his friend.
He’d never seen such marksmanship from Lu Kai in his previous life. Perhaps it was because Lu Kai had died too early back then.
Now, at least, there was another chance.
Any regret over failing to recruit Iron Wolf faded from Chen Yi’s heart.
With the giant zombie now crippled, unable to fight back, Chen Yi rushed to finish it.
He gripped his twin-bladed sword and slashed again and again through the mangled flesh.
With a glint of cold light, the blade sank into the zombie’s neck.
