“You bastard!”

The leader let out a dark, furious roar.

He had never allowed anyone to defy him, but this man’s reaction had already gone far beyond anything he had anticipated.

Clearly, the man was determined to cause trouble, even at the cost of his own life.

With an icy gaze, he drew his pistol and aimed it at everyone.

Those who had sworn loyalty to the organization began retreating one after another. Now that they had seen through the man’s schemes, contempt appeared on every face.

From that moment onward, they no longer held out any hope for the X Organization.

Chen Yi and the others had still not discovered a way to destroy the mutated rats completely, but at least they were evenly matched.

Unable to kill Chen Yi, the pack of mutated rats began withdrawing in a tactical retreat.

Lu Kai and the others stared in astonishment.

Who could have imagined that such tiny creatures possessed intelligence no weaker than that of humans? It was simply unbelievable.

“Surprised?” Chen Yi turned toward them and gave a faint smile. “This is only one of their abilities.”

Kunpeng nodded with deep conviction.

“The boss is right. These things possess even greater power. They may appear submissive on the surface, but they’re extremely arrogant at heart!”

Perhaps because he was a creature himself, Kunpeng sensed it far more strongly than the others.

The rats’ eyes also swept toward Kunpeng in unison.

Little Kunpeng was about to strike, but Big Kunpeng stopped him.

“Why won’t you let me act, Father?” Little Kunpeng cried anxiously. “Without my help, they—”

“They’ll pull themselves together!” Big Kunpeng interrupted.

“We’re in this together, so we should each bear our share of the responsibility. Little Peng, don’t forget that Chen Yi and the others are our friends. Unless absolutely necessary, we cannot reveal our trump card.”

Chen Yi had not expected Old Kunpeng to have considered everything so carefully. He nodded.

“You’re right. I was thinking the same thing. Brother, your concerns are perfectly reasonable.”

“Don’t praise me.” Old Kunpeng gave a self-mocking smile.

“I’ve simply spent enough time with you to gradually understand a few things. Chen Yi, when it comes to ability, you’re stronger than any of us.”

Chen Yi did not care much about fame or recognition. He waved a hand dismissively.

“Don’t say that. You’re giving me too much credit. The real problem now is that the natural mutation of these rats suggests that more dangers are appearing in this world.”

“Brother Yi.” Chu Yunxi took out an instrument used to analyze mutated creatures. “According to the data, the mutants consumed human food. Our own supplies are already running low, so we don’t know whether we may have eaten something similar ourselves.”

“Ah!”

Chen Yaxi and the others drew in sharp breaths.

Chu Yunxi’s words made them realize instantly how serious the situation was.

If what Chu Yunxi had said was true, and they had all consumed something similar, then death might not be far away.

“Don’t panic.”

George, who had previously been responsible for distributing the supplies, immediately rejected the idea.

“I know the situation is dangerous, but you have to believe me. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with my food. The mutants’ severe changes were caused by what they ate, but there’s no need to worry too much. We used a gene-conversion device!”

As he spoke, George pulled a small instrument from his sleeve and handed it to Chu Yunxi and the others.

Chen Yi walked over and punched him lightly on the shoulder, giving him an exasperated smile.

“You had this thing all along and didn’t say a word? Why the theatrics? Do you enjoy watching everyone panic?”

“No!”

George shook his head and grew serious.

“Boss, I thought the device was far too important. If those lackeys seized it, things would have gone terribly wrong for all of us!”

George was a shrewd and calculating man. He would never act rashly at a time like this. His only concern was how to ensure that everyone escaped unharmed.

He had spent a fortune completing the genetic-modification device back when the zombie apocalypse first erupted. Losing it would have been an utter catastrophe.

It might not prove that all food could kill humans, but it did at least confirm that some substances could cause mutation. The creatures that had risked stealing human food simply to survive were proof enough.

“Poor little rats.” Chen Yaxi shrugged and clicked her tongue.

“They stole some food and happened to eat the mutated kind. Now look at them—they can’t even change back.”

“You little girl.” Chu Yunxi pinched her cheek and smiled helplessly. “This isn’t something to joke about. Do you realize how serious the trouble we’re facing is?”

At its root, the mutated rats were a sign that even more creatures in this world could undergo mutation.

“Let’s not talk about that for now.”

Chen Yi pointed toward the zombies and rats that were still advancing and let out a helpless sigh.

“They won’t stop until they achieve their goal. We’ll have to fight first!”

“Let me handle it!”

Teng Snake flicked his tongue, a trace of crimson flashing in his eyes. The next moment, he swept his tail through the air, sending the zombies and the mass of rats surging toward them flying in every direction.

Hu Sanhan and the others were once again stunned.

Teng Snake’s combat strength was truly astonishing. Although he usually wore a dark expression and seemed eager to swallow Chen Yi and the rest of them whole, when it mattered, he was incredibly dependable.

“Retreat!”

The low command had barely sounded when a clear whistle ordered the surviving rats and zombies to withdraw at once.

Teng Snake tried to pursue them, but Chen Yi stopped him.

“If you go after them now, you’ll only be throwing your life away. In my opinion, the best course is to wait and see what happens.”

“That doesn’t seem right.” Teng Snake frowned, clearly dissatisfied.

“Boss, if we don’t wipe them out completely, they may cause endless trouble later.”

“That’s exactly what they’re waiting for!”

Chen Yi’s gaze sharpened as he sneered.

“I couldn’t understand earlier how those zombies had recovered so quickly and coordinated their retreat with the rat army. Now I do. There must be some kind of chip technology implanted inside their bodies—something we know nothing about.”

Chu Yunxi suddenly understood.

“So we were looking in the wrong direction from the very beginning? We were one move short. We thought we had solved everything, but it turned out to be a problem with the chips!”

“Exactly.” Chen Yi smiled in relief.

“It’s better to be cautious now. We can’t let those bastards seize an opportunity to turn the tables on us. As for everything else, it doesn’t matter.”

Chu Yunxi and the others nodded.

“Then we’ll wait for those bastards to come looking for us. But when I think about it, I still can’t accept this!”

“There’s no need to rush.” Chen Yi smiled again.

“Those who are meant to come will come.”
