An increasing number of zombies launched a frenzied assault against Chen Yi and his companions. However, Chen Yi had made prior arrangements; despite the immense strength of the attackers, Chen Yi’s absolute superiority allowed them to wipe out the entire horde in short order.

"Boss."

Lu Kai and Hu Sanhan panted heavily, shaking their heads. "That was basically a suicide run. This is our first time engaging with creatures like that!"

"Do not let your guard down."

Chen Yi issued another warning, sensing that the situation was taking a turn for the worse. These zombies, which should have been operating normally, seemed to possess an inexhaustible source of energy, relentlessly battering everyone in sight.

This level of power could turn the tide of the entire battle. Chen Yi warned them again, "Everyone, stay ready. No one is coming to help us; we must rely on ourselves!"

These words immediately bolstered the team’s morale. Just as Hu Sanhan and Lu Kai were preparing to unleash even greater power, one of the zombies spoke up.

"Chen Yi, tell them to stop."

Though Chen Yi knew the zombies had been mounting a dual offensive, he had not expected them to have evolved to the point of condensing this power into a tangible form to use against them. Clearly, this group possessed their own intelligence. Furthermore, the fact that these zombies could now speak to rebut arguments was even more unsettling.

Chen Yaxi spoke up directly. "Brother, look, this zombie seems to be struggling with some concepts. Should I go over and educate him?"

Chen Yi wanted to refuse, but seeing the look on the young girl's face, he couldn't bear to disappoint her and nodded. "Fine, you can go. But if he shows you any disrespect, tell me, and I will take care of him."

"Don't worry, I won't get hurt!"

Chen Yaxi blinked her eyes. "Leave the rest to me."

Chen Yi sensed a change in her and leaned in, his gaze resolute. "Do you feel like I have been forcing you to do things you don't want to do?"

"Not at all."

Chen Yaxi appeared completely innocent, showing no signs of someone capable of causing harm. However, Chen Yi felt a flicker of violence emerging within her, as if some hidden power had influenced her and caused a transformation.

"Brother, why are you looking at me like that?" Chen Yaxi blinked, looking completely guileless.

"At a time like this, shouldn't we be focusing on the enemy?"

"I know." Chen Yi nodded, but his eyes remained fixed on her. "Did you touch something earlier? I feel like your temperament has changed."

Chen Yaxi paused, then smiled. "Silly brother! The reason I am like this is because I understand deep down that protecting the people around me is what I must do!"

So that was it! Upon realizing her motives, Chen Yi felt a wave of relief. He knew the girl wouldn't lose herself.

At that moment, the controlled zombies, along with some orcs, charged at them again. The young Kunpeng wanted to join the fray, but Chen Yi, having promised the elder Kunpeng he would keep it safe, grabbed its tail.

"Don't be reckless. Leave this to us!"

Seeing Chen Yi hold the young Kunpeng back, Lu Kai sensed his inner thoughts. "Boss, do you feel guilty about the elder Kunpeng?"

"Indeed." Chen Yi admitted his feelings directly. "Even though I didn't save him, it doesn't mean I am without responsibility. I feel I have failed him."

"That's not on you," Hu Sanhan said, shrugging. "In this apocalypse, everyone has the right to fight for themselves. Besides, even if you had tried to help, it likely would have been in vain, as that demon whale was clearly targeting him specifically."

Chen Yi’s expression remained grave. "I wonder if their battle has ended."

He said this not out of a desire for tragedy, but because he hoped the elder Kunpeng still had a chance at survival rather than having completely perished. Unfortunately, he knew that surviving such an encounter would be difficult.

Just then, a massive wave crashed forward. As everyone looked over, the demon whale leaped out of the water. The sight left everyone stunned—could the elder Kunpeng have been finished off?

However, upon seeing the battered state of the demon whale, Chen Yi sensed something was wrong. Though this giant mutated creature was formidable, it looked like it was faring poorly, with its condition rapidly deteriorating.

At that same moment, the elder Kunpeng leaped out as well. The sight sent a wave of excitement through the group.

"Thank goodness, the elder Kunpeng is still alive!"

It was true! Seeing the elder Kunpeng return, Chen Yi felt a weight lift from his heart. He knew that while the creature had faced a grave challenge, it wouldn't be so easily defeated.

The demon whale began to retreat, and with a single whip of the elder Kunpeng’s tail, it was sent flying into the distance.

High above, satellite surveillance transmitted the real-time footage to the members of the X Organization. While they were furious at the failure of their comrade, Jack, they saw value in the data gathered on these individuals.

The Zombie King, idly tossing a glass orb in his hand, let out a scoff. "Truly interesting. Chen Yi is indeed a formidable opponent."

"Boss, I don't understand what you mean." The other zombies turned their gaze toward him. "He is our greatest rival."

"I am aware he is our rival," the man replied coldly, looking at his subordinates. "But can you find another candidate as perfect as him for our project?"

The group was shocked. By saying this, the leader meant he wanted to include Chen Yi as a candidate in the X Organization's "New Generation Human" program.

The Zombie King stood up, a glimmer of anticipation in his eyes. "We can no longer become the strongest beings ourselves. If we can persuade Chen Yi to cooperate with us, we can develop superior human genes and use them to help humanity rise again."

Since the start of the zombie apocalypse, the man had records of only about three thousand living humans left. Aside from Chen Yi’s group and a few scattered survivors across the globe, he intended to vet them one by one.

Those who could survive under these conditions were clearly exceptional. Regardless of whether the plan would work, capturing them was the top priority.

He wore a cold expression once more. "Pass the word down: issue a bounty for Chen Yi immediately. Whoever captures him will be rewarded with three hundred energy crystals!"
