Chapter 115: Officially Designating Chen Yi's X Organization as the Target
“Wait a moment!”
Chen Yi clearly had a different opinion about what the man had just said.
“Your life doesn’t belong only to me—it’s yours as well. I’m someone who speaks plainly; I don’t like to wield authority as a threat or force you into some drastic change.”
A glimmer of resolve flashed through Harris’s eyes.
“It’s precisely because I know you’re a man of honor that I’m not afraid. But to be honest, Brother Chen, you need to be careful. The people from the X Organization truly have ulterior motives. They really are plotting something against you!”
These words made Chu Yunxi tense up.
“What are they planning? And what role did you play among them?”
Harris quickly raised his hands in protest.
“Please don’t misunderstand, sister-in-law. I did once intend to act against Brother Chen, because they promised me an antidote and the restoration of my original self in exchange for killing him.”
“But I realized that was impossible!”
Chu Yunxi let out a cold laugh.
“If those people really could do that, why would they have poisoned you in the first place, turning you into this half-human, half-ghoul?”
“Exactly!”
Nodding again, Chu Yunxi looked weary.
“It’s because I blindly trusted the wrong people that I’ve suffered such bitter consequences. Now I regret it—though I’m not sure if it’s too late.”
“Better to mend the pen after the sheep are lost than never at all. Besides, your decision to abandon the darkness for the light is a tremendous help to us. How could we possibly fail?”
Chen Yi’s comforting words moved Harris deeply.
Indeed, as a leader, Chen Yi was both courageous and wise, always adhering to his principles.
At that moment, the scattered debris on the ground began to sink into the mud at a pace visible to the naked eye.
“Boss, watch out!”
Lu Kai shouted just as tendrils shot up from the earth, reaching for Chen Yi.
Without hesitation, Chen Yi dodged and swung his twin blades, slicing the tendril cleanly.
But this was only the beginning.
A mass of vines began to spread around them, engulfing the group.
“What kind of monster is this?” Chen Yi glanced at Harris, guessing he would know the answer.
Harris struggled against the strength of the vines as he explained.
“This is the Kiss of Death. It was once just an ordinary jungle creeper, but after being altered by mutant genes, it became what you see now.”
Chen Yi’s heart sank.
These mutant genes were proving far too destructive. They hadn’t even figured out how to deal with the zombie horde, and now this new threat had emerged.
X Organization’s research was fraught with deadly, forbidden dangers.
Before they could regroup, the deadly vines surged forth once again.
“Boss, let us handle this!”
In an instant, a horde of zombie monkeys swarmed forward, gnawing desperately at the vines.
However, the vines only retreated temporarily; they were not truly defeated.
At this point, Harris seemed to remember something. He quickly pulled out a flute and started to play.
Under the influence of the music, the once-frenzied vines gradually calmed, eventually slipping back into a dormant state.
Only then did Chu Yunxi and the others breathe a sigh of relief.
“At last, we’ve gotten rid of those things. But how did you discover that music was their weakness?”
Harris shook his head.
“It’s not their weakness—they simply love music. That’s why I was able to take advantage of it. Otherwise, do you think we could have escaped?”
He was right, but now a new problem presented itself. Harris could stop the vines, but it was impossible for him to keep playing music endlessly. That would be too exhausting.
Harris, however, seemed pleased with the idea.
“Couldn’t we just make a recording, and play the music around us continually until we leave?”
“It’s a good idea, but do you realize the risks?” Chen Yi stated his position. “Playing music constantly would make us the enemies of the whole island. You should know how many mutants there are here.”
“Three hundred and seventy-seven,” Harris replied. “And those are just the failed experiments. As for the perfected ones, there are even more, but they’ve all been taken away. The perfected mutants wouldn’t be here with us.”
“I see.” Chen Yi nodded slightly, sharing his own thoughts. “In that case, why don’t you try to locate the mutants, and then we could join forces with them?”
“Join forces for what?” Harris was a little confused.
“Most of them are mindless now. That’s incredibly dangerous for you.”
“If it’s not dangerous, how can we hope to survive?” Chen Yi knew all too well the importance of vigilance in times of peace. If the power of the mutants wasn’t put to use, they would only regret the waste in the end.
Harris, reading Chen Yi’s gaze, hurried to explain.
“Chief Chen, if these people could be tamed, they could become just like me—your powerful allies!”
“And if they can’t be tamed, we can still harness their strength!”
Chen Yi unsheathed his twin blades.
He had once wondered why the energy cores had grown so scarce, but now he understood: the emergence of mutants had caused this unexpected outcome.
Therefore, if he could extract the blood of these mutants and use the ant gene modification, perhaps he could gain even more energy.
Harris grew nervous.
“Boss, what exactly are you planning? I know you must have your own strategy, but I think this matter…”
Chen Yi waved his hand, his gaze suddenly calm and open.
“Everything I’m preparing now may seem inexplicable to you, but in time, you’ll see these are inevitable choices. You can’t control the source of the zombies, so the only way is to change the direction of humanity itself.”
With that, the situation took a sharp turn.
Chu Yunxi, who had been racking her brain for a solution to the mutant problem on this island, saw that Chen Yi was already thinking ahead.
Now that there was a plan, things would be much easier!
She took Chen Yi’s hand, smiling sweetly.
“Husband, it seems I won’t even have to think in the future. Your ideas are always in perfect harmony with mine!”
“Don’t joke around,” Chen Yi tapped her head, shaking his own. “No matter what, we have to keep thinking. We’re human beings, not mindless zombies. We must always have our own direction.”
Chu Yunxi smiled again, “Understood, I was just joking. No need to be so serious! Alright, I won’t say it again. But you have to promise me—be careful. Don’t let those villains target you. As long as you’re alive, I can be at ease!”
