Chapter One Hundred and Four: The Third-Rank Zombie King
Hearing this, the man let out a contemptuous sneer.
“In this world, there are no friends left. What else do you have to say? Could it be that you really think you are qualified to stand against me?”
“This guy’s lost his mind,” Hu Sahan said, glancing at Lu Kai beside him. “He already knows what power our boss has, and yet he still wants to show off his strength.”
“That’s just overestimating himself,” Lu Kai said with a shrug. “Well, there are always people like that. What can we do about it? Right?”
“Damn it!”
Seeing those people mock him, the man swept out a hand, and the zombies surged forward together, attacking Lu Kai and Hu Sahan.
“Holy hell, that’s downright shameless,” Hu Sahan snapped, drawing his golden broadsword at once. Lu Kai also raised both guns and opened fire.
Chen Yi was about to join them, but the man blocked his way, his gaze sharp.
“Your opponent is me. Keep your eyes on me.”
Chen Yi narrowed his eyes at him, knowing that if he did not kill this man first, there would be no way to save anyone. He immediately pushed his power to the limit.
“Fine. Since you want to die, I’ll grant your wish.”
With that, he lunged forward with both blades, slashing repeatedly. Yet the other man’s body was like an iron wall, completely unharmed. Chen Yi frowned, unable to help sinking into thought.
Strange. Could this fellow also have obtained the power of the Calamity Curse Disk? But that made no sense.
Seeing Chen Yi’s expression, the man burst into laughter.
“So you’ve finally noticed the trick, have you? Let me tell you, I’m just an ordinary monster. But my body has been forged with the lives of tens of thousands of people into armor that can never be pierced. Cut away one layer, and I can simply shed another.”
Chen Yi’s brow furrowed. “So you used human skin as a medium, then continuously replicated it with the power of zombies?”
“That’s right. I did use human skin, but what makes it even more special is that I turned all those skins into a protective layer with their blood plasma. In other words, I’m using human power to block you. No matter how sharp your blades are, can they strike at a person?”
Despicable. Shameless.
Chen Yi did not slow the pace of his attacks. He knew that in the apocalypse, all kinds of people would resort to any means necessary to survive, but this sort of creature was nauseating beyond measure. The lives of countless people had been reduced to nothing more than a human-skin shield for him.
Cut one layer away, and another would grow back. In truth, the so-called lack of damage merely meant that he had sliced away some invisible husk; within this man there remained countless unseen dead souls.
“Useless.”
The man shook his head again, yawning as he spoke. “Even if you’re furious beyond measure, you still can’t do anything to me.”
“That may not be true.”
As Chen Yi spoke, he once again released his power.
As his strength surged continuously, the man who had just moments ago remained calm and composed suddenly noticed fine cracks appearing all over his body.
How was this possible? His body was protected by a shield formed from millions upon millions of lives. No matter how fast Chen Yi’s power was, it could not possibly break through such a thick defense!
Yet seeing that the man was still refusing to see reason, Chen Yi stopped hesitating. He accelerated once more, and with a single strike, shattered every layer of defense in an instant.
At last, the man’s crimson zombie form was revealed. Chen Yi’s gaze turned icy. “What you call an eternal life form does not exist. Human beings cannot be eternal, let alone zombies.”
“No, impossible!”
The man instantly clawed at his own face. Even as blood streamed down in torrents, he did not care. He only fixed Chen Yi with a furious stare. “Why won’t you stop fighting? Wouldn’t it be better to submit to me?”
“You’re pitiful.”
Chen Yi’s face remained expressionless as he spoke, which left the man staring blankly. “What did you say? Who’s pitiful?”
“You.”
Faced with this fellow, Chen Yi merely shook his head. “I’ve seen plenty of people like you, but none as foolish as you. You think you can survive by means like this? While destroying others, you are also piling up slaughter upon yourself. Do you think Heaven will let you off?”
A crushing pain twisted in his chest. The man suddenly felt as though he were nothing more than a clown, his private shame peeled back layer by layer by Chen Yi. Now, seeing Chen Yi’s victorious expression, he began to feel lost. Had he truly been wrong?
In the very next moment, a blade had already cut across his throat, and blood sprayed forth at once.
He crashed heavily to the ground, trying in vain to repair himself, but Chen Yi’s twin blades had already pierced through his heart.
He knew that from the moment he had chosen to slaughter so many people, Chen Yi’s killing intent had been fully awakened. There would be no path left for him.
With a dry, bitter laugh, the zombie man’s lips curled into a hopeless smile. “You’re impressive, Chen Yi. To have you as an opponent, I feel it was worth it.”
“But I don’t think it was worth it.”
Chen Yi looked at him with an expressionless face and shook his head.
He swiftly drew back his blades, watching as the man’s body slowly dissolved into the ground. He knew this was likely the backlash of some technique the man had used.
Even monsters standing at the boundary between zombie and human were bound by certain taboos.
For the sake of immortality, or perhaps to endlessly slaughter and satisfy his own visual hunger, this man had truly exhausted every scheme he could devise. Regrettably, he would still have to pay a terrible price.
“Boss, we’ve taken care of ours too!”
By then, Hu Sahan and Lu Kai, having finished off the other zombies, had also come over.
“Should we head back now?”
“Not yet.”
Chen Yi’s eyes were fixed on the black-robed man slowly approaching from afar. Though the man wore a hood, Chen Yi could tell he was not human, for he carried none of a human’s living aura.
Clear applause sounded. The man’s eyes were blood-red, and beneath his cold face lay a trace of阴沉 amusement.
“What an impressive performance. Watching this, I almost feel as though I’m becoming a second you. But Chen Yi, is it really appropriate to be killing people like this on my territory?”
“Third tier.”
Chen Yi’s face grew just as solemn as he revealed the other’s identity.
“I never expected you to be a corpse king. It seems everything here has your permission.”
“Of course.”
The man lifted his chin again and smiled faintly.
“What I like most is watching fratricide. And that is something you will never truly understand.”
Chen Yi swiftly swung both blades. “Whether I understand it or not, since you’ve met me today, don’t even think about leaving alive!”
“Tsk, tsk.”
The man tossed aside his hood, his gaze icy.
“Why make this so difficult? Before you chose to oppose me, did you never think that your actions now would only bring retribution upon yourself?”
