Chapter One Hundred and Three: A Human Experiment So Cruel It Shocked the Conscience

Although Ye Yang had warned them in advance that this would be unimaginably cruel, when they finally reached the southern isle, everyone was still so shaken by what they saw that they could scarcely speak.

The surrounding area was clearly devoid of the people who had carried out the experiments, yet the traces they had left behind were easy to see. The scheme they had built, along with the dark stains of blood, bore witness to what had happened here.

Chu Yunxi and Chen Yaxi both frowned, and at the same time were utterly stunned by the scene before them. Their eyes shimmered with tears, and it was almost impossible to imagine such things taking place in this world.

"All right."

Chen Yi patted both of them on the shoulder. "I already warned you about this. I trust you understand why now. Don't be upset any longer. Let's keep moving."

Along the left edge of the island there were still remains left behind by earlier experiments and battles with the undead. Chen Yi felt certain that some experimental subjects must still be here.

"You two stay here. I'll go take a look inside."

"Don't go."

At that moment, Chen Yaxi and Chu Yunxi both grabbed him, worry flashing in their eyes.

"Who knows what might still be in there? If something happens..."

"It's fine."

He waved them off again and gave a faint smile.

"At a time like this, if I don't go, who will? Trust me, I'll be all right."

Even so, Chen Yi knew this struggle against the Shadow Organization would not be resolved so easily.

After carefully surveying the surroundings, he thought that even if living things still remained here, they were not necessarily truly sane. He was ready for battle at any moment.

As expected, while he was still lost in thought, a half-human, half-undead creature roared and charged at him.

Chen Yi struck swiftly and cleaved it in two.

Yet the undead before him then gradually split into separate beings. Clearly, the evolution of these undead had far surpassed all their expectations.

What shocked him even more was that the split undead had also undergone a mutation in bodily function.

In fighting Chen Yi, they could clearly analyze his movements and defend in sequence. This made Chen Yi realize that these undead could learn their next move from failure.

He had known that the undead could change through successive alterations caused by human influence, but such speed and intelligence still sent a chill through him.

For that reason, Chen Yi made an immediate decision: he needed to return and discuss the next step with everyone.

But just then, the undead from earlier charged at Chen Yi once more.

"Looking for death!"

Lu Kai and Hu Sanhan moved at once, trapping it with swirling forces, while also helping Chen Yi restrict the creature on the other side. Working together, the three of them crushed it completely.

Only after finishing did they finally breathe easier. Still, they were dumbfounded by the undead's speed of evolution and its capabilities.

Lu Kai asked Chen Yi, "Boss, I keep feeling like this one is different from the ones we've encountered before."

"Of course it's different."

Chen Yi spoke slowly.

He pointed to the fragments of the undead and explained, "They should already be evolved undead. If I am not mistaken, they now stand at the boundary between half-human and half-undead. Some people have already found a way to coexist with the undead, and that is to turn themselves into monsters that are neither human nor ghost."

Lu Kai drew in a sharp breath, eyes widening.

"No way. Someone really dares to do that? If they did, wouldn't they turn themselves into something that isn't human or ghost, and besides, such a thing can never evolve again!"

"I know."

Chen Yi spoke again, equally helpless.

"But some people are indeed willing to do such things. Though it may be thankless and not worth the effort to many, those people do not think that way. So what matters most now is vigilance. Remember, caution is the parent of safety."

Those words immediately put everyone on edge. If this was not handled properly, the consequences would be unimaginable.

In an instant, everyone grew serious and ready to attack at any moment.

At that very moment, strange sounds rose all around them. Chen Yi's brow tightened.

"Be careful, everyone. I suspect there are still remnants of undead power here!"

"Impossible!"

Lu Kai looked around. "But I don't sense any life at all. Even if the undead have no life, creatures that are part-undead and part-human shouldn't be able to escape our perception!"

"Not necessarily."

Chen Yi remained composed as he warned them, "At a time like this, even the slightest carelessness is unacceptable. Just keep your guard up."

As expected, before long, a huge mass of undead began converging on them and charging at Chen Yi's group.

"Boss, you really saw this coming."

Lu Kai was now utterly convinced. He had never imagined that this group of undead had truly been hiding on the island, and that their timing and speed of attack were so precise, as though they had been deliberately trained.

"Someone else should come out now."

Chen Yi spoke slowly. "Since you've designed this trap, why not come out and fight us face to face?"

With a clap of his hands, a man wearing a silver mask stepped forward.

"Chen Yi, you really are formidable. I thought I could keep this from you and swap the real for the fake, but now it seems I lost. You discovered this step ahead of schedule."

"Even if I discovered it, you haven't lost completely. You have already changed the fate of so many undead and so many people. That alone has made me very angry."

The man gave a soft laugh, and his eyes grew much darker.

"You can be angry, but do you know that I did not have your good fortune? While all of you evolved into mighty ones with special abilities, I became a monster. Can you understand what that feels like?"

"What does you becoming a monster have to do with us?"

Lu Kai looked at him seriously.

"You shameless bastard. Do you expect us to pay for your mistakes?"

The man's eyes turned cold.

"Is that how you train the lackeys under you?"

"They are not my lackeys."

Chen Yi cut him off with absolute certainty. "They are my friends. You are not allowed to speak of them that way."
