Chapter 6: Father-in-Law and Mother-in-Law

“Where has everyone gone?”
Yingxia looked around the vast courtyard, puzzled to find it completely deserted.
In the past, there would always be servants bustling about here.

“Sigh.”
“The servants heard that the Fan family intends to target our Su family, and fearing they might get implicated, they all left,” Steward Zhou sighed as he explained.

Upon hearing this, a shadow of sorrow crossed the sisters’ eyes.

Entering the inner courtyard, Chen Fan spotted a middle-aged man and a woman, still carrying a graceful charm, sitting there.

“Father, Mother.”
Seeing them, the sisters could no longer hold back; their eyes reddened as they ran over.

These two were none other than Chen Fan’s father-in-law, Su Yi, and mother-in-law, Wang Wei.

Seeing the sisters suddenly appear, Su Yi and Wang Wei first showed delight, but it quickly turned to anger.

“Didn’t I tell you not to return to the Su residence to avoid being seen by the Fan family and getting caught up in their schemes? Why can’t you listen?” Su Yi’s voice was sharp with anger.

The sisters lowered their heads in hurt at his words.

Seeing their daughter’s pained expression, Su Yi and Wang Wei’s hearts ached deeply.

“Son-in-law, greetings to Father-in-law and Mother-in-law,” Chen Fan said respectfully, bowing.

Only then did Su Yi and Wang Wei notice Chen Fan.

Looking at his patched clothes, their eyes grew complicated.

If not for the trouble with the Fan family, they would never have allowed their daughter to marry such a poor man and endure hardship.

“Hmph.”
Su Yi nodded slightly.

Seeing their cold demeanor, Chen Fan paid it no mind, his smile unwavering.

“Master, since they’ve come, let’s have them eat something nice at home. See how thin they’ve gotten,” Wang Wei said tenderly, looking at Yingchun and Yingxia with concern.

Su Yi nodded in agreement.

“Steward Zhou, go call the kitchen...”

Su Yi was about to order some of Yingchun and Yingxia’s favorite dishes when he remembered the Su family’s cooks had already fled.

“Go to Wanfuwu Restaurant and buy some dishes,” Su Yi said with a hint of melancholy.

“Yes, sir.”
Steward Zhou answered and hurried away.

Yingchun and Yingxia noticed Su Yi’s disappointment and immediately stepped forward to comfort him.

“Father...”
The sisters deliberately reminisced about childhood memories to cheer up Su Yi and Wang Wei.

The two responded warmly and soon began to laugh heartily.

They all knew this might be the last joyful moment their family would share.

Soon, Steward Zhou returned with a table full of aromatic, beautifully presented dishes.

Yet none of Yingchun, Yingxia, Su Yi, or Wang Wei had much appetite.

They all sensed this might be their final meal together as a family.

Chen Fan, however, felt no such burden. Seeing the sumptuous spread, he eagerly began to feast.

Years of military life had left him with little concern for manners at the table.

He grabbed a chicken drumstick in one hand and a pig’s trotter in the other, biting into them with gusto.

Not only that, he made no effort to suppress the sounds of his chewing.

Su Yi and Wang Wei frowned, casting disapproving glances at Chen Fan.

“Why are you all staring at me? You should eat too! Don’t waste such delicious food,” Chen Fan said cheerfully as he gnawed on the pig’s trotter.

“Wife, you should eat as well! This pig’s trotter is really good,” he said, handing one to them.

“Husband, we don’t like to eat that,” the sisters said, blushing.

Hearing this, Chen Fan could only eat their portions himself.

Watching Chen Fan devour the food ravenously, Su Yi and Wang Wei’s hearts ached even more for their daughters.

“Oh!”

At that moment, a richly dressed man arrived in the courtyard, accompanied by a group of burly men.

Upon seeing them, Su Yi and Wang Wei immediately stood up.

Yingchun and Yingxia showed clear fear.

“Fan Wei, this is my Su residence. What right do you have to enter? Get out immediately!” Su Yi rebuked the man leading the group.

Fan Wei was a minor steward in the household of Chancellor Fan Zeng.

This time, he had come to Dongyang County with his eyes set on the Su family’s ancestral tomb.

“Brother, I brought Big Brother Fan here,” a woman said, stepping out from behind Fan Wei.

Hearing her voice, Chen Fan, who had been eating heartily, looked up involuntarily.

Upon hearing Su Wenqi’s words, anger immediately flashed across Su Yi’s face.

“Who gave you the right to bring them to my Su residence? Do you have the authority?” Su Yi shouted fiercely at Su Wenqi.

“Brother, I’m doing this for the good of the Su family,” Su Wenqi said coldly.
“It’s just an ancestral tomb; we can find another place. Do you want to see the Su family’s centuries-old legacy ruined under your watch?”

Though she claimed to act for the family’s good, Su Wenqi’s motives were mostly self-serving.

If the Fan family targeted the Su family, she would certainly be implicated as well.

Seeing Su Wenqi’s indifferent attitude, Su Yi trembled with rage.

“Su Yi, this is the transfer contract. Sign it immediately,” Fan Wei said, pulling out a document from his pocket.

“Brother, just sign it! Even if you don’t think of yourself, consider Yingchun and Yingxia!” Su Wenqi urged beside him.

“Get out of here! Even if I die, I will never give up the Su family’s ancestral tomb,” Su Yi said coldly.

Upon hearing this, a cold smile curled on Fan Wei’s lips.

His gaze shifted to Yingchun and Yingxia beside him. Seeing their beauty, he swallowed hard.

Fan Wei’s eyes made the sisters feel deeply uneasy.

“I’ve long heard that the Su family has a pair of exceptional twins. I thought it was a rumor, but it turns out to be true.”

“Since you won’t show respect, don’t blame me for being ruthless,” Fan Wei said coldly.

“Guards, seize these twins and take them away. Su Yi, once you’ve thought it through, we might return them.”

“But in the meantime, they will be enjoying our company for a few days,” Fan Wei sneered.

His men swallowed hard upon hearing this.

The sisters turned pale with fear.

“They are my wives! Did you ask for my opinion before binding them?”

At that moment, Chen Fan finally put down the pig’s trotter, stood up, and said coldly.
