Volume Two: New Challenges Chapter Twenty-Four: The Mysterious Figure in Black Robes
Amidst the jubilation of Liu Kaixin and his companions as they celebrated their victory, the cold sneer of the mysterious figure in the black robe felt like a stone cast into a tranquil lake, sending out unsettling ripples. However, lost in the joy of their triumph, the group remained unaware of this hidden observation.
Upon returning to the town, Liu Kaixin and his friends were met with even warmer welcomes and festivities. The town was adorned with lanterns and streamers, and the people danced and sang, expressing their gratitude to the heroes in the grandest of ways. To honor their achievements, the King hosted a magnificent banquet, inviting Liu Kaixin and his companions as guests of honor. The tables were laden with fine wine and delicacies, and the air was filled with laughter and a sense of blissful harmony.
Yet, Liu Kaixin felt a lingering sense of unease. The appearance of the Magic Octopus had been too sudden—could there be other unknown forces pulling the strings from the shadows? The emergence of that mysterious black-robed figure only deepened his suspicions. He forced a smile to navigate the bustle of the banquet, all the while pondering these questions.
As the celebration reached its climax, a sudden cold wind gusted through the hall, extinguishing every candle. The entire room plunged into darkness, and the guests began to scream in terror. Liu Kaixin and his companions immediately grew alert, readying themselves for battle.
In that moment, a dark figure materialized in the center of the hall like a phantom. Cloaked entirely in black, the person’s face remained hidden, save for a pair of eyes that glimmered with an eerie, spectral light in the darkness.
"Who are you? Why do you come here to cause trouble?" Liu Kaixin demanded in a stern voice.
The black-robed figure did not answer, offering only a sinister laugh. "Ha! Liu Kaixin, do you truly think yourselves so impressive for defeating the Magic Octopus? That was merely a small gift I sent your way."
"What exactly is your goal?" Princess Holly asked, brandishing her magic staff, prepared to strike at any moment.
The figure slowly raised a hand and pointed at Liu Kaixin. "Your divine artifact—I am determined to have it. It shall become the tool with which I rule the world, and you shall all become my prisoners."
Liu Kaixin gripped the artifact tightly. "Never! As long as we stand, you shall not succeed."
The figure let out a contemptuous snort. "You? How naive. My visit today was merely a warning. Next time, things will not be so simple." With that, the figure dissolved into a wisp of black smoke and vanished instantly.
As the figure departed, the candles in the hall flickered back to life. The guests, still shaken, began to whisper about what had just transpired. Liu Kaixin and his companions felt an immense weight upon their hearts; they knew the true crisis had only just begun.
After returning to their quarters, the group sat together to discuss a plan of action.
"This black-robed figure’s power is unfathomable, and he seems to know everything about us," Xuan Yi the Daoist said with a grave expression.
"He wants the artifact; we must protect it at all costs," Liu Kaixin said, staring intently at the object in his hand, as if he could draw the strength to defeat his enemy from it.
"I believe we should first investigate the origins of this person. To know your enemy is to be invincible," suggested Niu Nu.
The group nodded in agreement. They decided to split into several teams to launch an investigation. Liu Kaixin and Hu Nu set off for the mysterious Magic Forest, where it was said many hidden secrets lay buried. Shu Nan and Hou Nan infiltrated an ancient library to search for clues regarding the black-robed figure. Princess Holly and Xuan Yi remained in town to consult with the elder sages, while Niu Nu was tasked with patrolling the perimeter to guard against another surprise attack.
Upon entering the Magic Forest, Liu Kaixin and Hu Nu were immediately struck by an aura of mystery. The forest was veiled in a light mist, and the trees were tall and dense, with sunlight filtering through the leaves to create scattered patches of light on the ground. They moved with caution, remaining vigilant of their surroundings.
Suddenly, Hu Nu heard a faint rustling. She stopped, signaling Liu Kaixin to be careful. The two held their breath, waiting in silence. Moments later, a massive beast lunged from the thicket. It resembled a lion, but its entire body was covered in sharp spikes, and it breathed torrents of flame.
"Watch out! It’s a Spike-Flame Lion!" Liu Kaixin shouted.
Undeterred, Hu Nu gripped her blade and charged. The beast roared, unleashing a wall of fire to block her advance. Seeing this, Liu Kaixin channeled the power of the artifact to create a curtain of water, extinguishing the flames.
Seizing the opportunity, Hu Nu leaped into the air and drove her blade into the lion’s head. The beast roared in agony, struggling violently. Liu Kaixin joined the fray, using the artifact’s power to strike at the creature’s weak points. Under their combined assault, the beast finally collapsed, its strength exhausted.
After the battle, the pair continued their trek. After searching for a long time, they discovered an ancient ruin. The heavy gates were shut tight, inscribed with strange runes.
Liu Kaixin studied the symbols, seeking a way to unlock the entrance. After some effort, he decoded the pattern and successfully opened the gate.
Inside, the air was thick with the scent of antiquity. In the center of the hall stood a massive crystal ball, radiating a mysterious glow.
Liu Kaixin stepped forward and touched it lightly. Suddenly, the crystal flared with brilliant light, projecting an image before them. In the vision, the black-robed figure stood before a dark castle, surrounded by a horde of evil creatures. The figure held a divine artifact—the very same one Liu Kaixin possessed—and was laughing triumphantly, as if celebrating a victory.
"Is this a vision of the future?" Hu Nu asked, startled.
Liu Kaixin furrowed his brow. "Whatever it is, we cannot allow it to come to pass. This figure must be connected to these ruins; we must find more clues."
Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed through the ruins. Liu Kaixin and Hu Nu grew alert, bracing themselves for a new challenge.
Meanwhile, Shu Nu and Hou Nu had made their own discovery in the ancient library. In a long-forgotten tome, they found records of the black-robed figure. He was an evil sorcerer from the Dark World who had once sought to conquer the world, only to be sealed away in the Abyss of Darkness by a powerful hero. Somehow, he had broken his seal and returned, setting his sights on the artifact in Liu Kaixin’s possession.
Princess Holly and Xuan Yi, through their discussions with the sages, learned something even more shocking: the artifact was not merely a weapon, but the key to opening the gate to another realm. If the sorcerer obtained it, he would likely open that portal, unleashing even greater evils, which would spell certain doom for the entire world.
Niu Nu, while patrolling, also noticed signs of trouble. She spotted shadowy figures lurking around the town, seemingly monitoring their every move. She immediately relayed this to the others.
Realizing the situation had become dire, the group knew they had to find the sorcerer’s lair and thwart his plot. After deliberation, they decided to follow their clues to a legendary Dark Castle, where the sorcerer was likely hiding.
They embarked on their journey, facing numerous hardships and dangers along the way. Yet, fueled by unwavering faith and the strength of their unity, they overcame every obstacle. Finally, they stood before the Dark Castle.
The fortress was cold and ominous, shrouded in a heavy, suffocating darkness. The gates were barred and etched with wicked runes. Liu Kaixin took a deep breath and led his companions toward the entrance. A heart-pounding final battle was about to unfold. Could they defeat evil once more and protect the peace of the world? Everything remained uncertain.
