Chapter 40: Your Status

Several people arrived together at the president’s office.
The staff members there stared at Su Nuo in shock. They exchanged glances, yet no one dared say a word.
What could it mean for the eldest Miss Su to come to the company dressed in professional attire?
Could she possibly be here to become their superior?
Some employees who were close to Mo Xiaoxue secretly looked toward her, but she merely shook her head lightly.
Since this was Duan Yubai’s order, no one could disobey.
But Duan Yubai was usually so busy. With Su Nuo under her watch, Mo Xiaoxue refused to believe the girl could cause any trouble.
Mo Xiaoxue glanced at Su Nuo, then turned to Duan Yubai.
“President Duan, there are four major meetings today, and we also have distinguished guests to receive this afternoon. How should we arrange Miss Su?”
“Didn’t I leave that to you?”
Duan Yubai waved his hand impatiently. “Just don’t let her wander around in front of me.”
With that, he went straight back into his office.
Mo Xiaoxue smiled. “Yes, President Duan.”
Keeping her away from him could not have been better.
Without Duan Yubai’s protection, Su Nuo would be at her mercy.
Mo Xiaoxue turned to Su Nuo, who had kept her head lowered the entire time.
“Miss Su—no. From now on, there is no eldest miss in this company. Everyone will be treated equally.”
“Su Nuo, come with me. I’ll handle your onboarding personally.”
She lifted her chin and strode out of the office in her high heels.
But as she passed Su Nuo, the slender heel of her shoe came down directly on Su Nuo’s foot.
Su Nuo instinctively let out a muffled groan.
Mo Xiaoxue stopped and pressed down even harder.
The thin heel left a deep mark on Su Nuo’s leather shoe.
“Su Nuo, what’s wrong?” she asked, looking at her with a faint, mocking smile.
“N-Nothing.” Su Nuo endured the pain, refusing to make another sound.
The other employees watched the two of them in astonishment.
Only then did Mo Xiaoxue withdraw her foot.
“If nothing’s wrong, hurry up and keep up. Did you think President Duan brought you here to enjoy yourself?”
Su Nuo lowered her head and hurried after her.
Even with her head bowed, she could still hear everyone’s murmurs.

“What happened to the eldest miss?”
“Is this some new act? Did she realize that pretending to be a fiery career woman wasn’t working, so now she’s decided to play the pitiful little innocent?”
“I heard she was coming to work at the company. I really wonder which department is unlucky enough to get her.”
In the past, Su Nuo had been a little tyrant who left chaos wherever she went.
Her demands had always been simple: wherever Duan Yubai was, she had to appear there too, just to make sure everyone noticed her.
She had promoted products with a hot-air balloon at a press conference and rehearsed all kinds of ridiculous dances at the company’s annual celebration.
She had even forced an important business partner aside at a banquet during a commercial summit.
Yet by a twist of fate, the other party had actually taken a liking to her flamboyant personality, and the company ultimately secured the partnership.
People used to say that Su Nuo was nothing more than a human-shaped shadow who followed Duan Yubai around, programmed to trail after him wherever he went.
Now that everyone knew she was coming to work at the company, many had begun whispering among themselves.
One employee who was close to Mo Xiaoxue even approached her to ask, “Xiaoxue, is the eldest miss coming to work in the president’s office?”
Mo Xiaoxue glanced at Su Nuo. “Of course not. The president hates her. Didn’t you know?”
The employee’s eyes widened, unable to believe Mo Xiaoxue had said it so openly.
Most people disliked Su Nuo’s behavior as well, but they only discussed it behind her back.
Even though Mo Xiaoxue was Duan Yubai’s secretary, how could she dare say such things right in front of Su Nuo?
Mo Xiaoxue gave a soft laugh. “President Duan gave the order. I’m merely following procedure. The Duan family’s position is that the company does not support idle people.”
She smoothed the loose strands of hair beside her ear.
“Chairman Duan and his wife feel the same way. It was all settled at home yesterday.”
She looked toward the dumbfounded employee.
“Everyone should remember this: the company has only Su Nuo, not an eldest miss. Company regulations are company regulations. They will not change because of certain people.”
Ding!
The elevator arrived, and Mo Xiaoxue stepped inside first.
Su Nuo hurried after her.
Before the elevator doors closed, everyone heard Mo Xiaoxue’s cold voice.
“From now on, Su Nuo, you are an ordinary employee of this company. This is the last time you will ride the president’s private elevator.”
“You need to understand your place.”
Su Nuo kept her head lowered and answered timidly, “I understand.”
Everyone stared at the slowly closing elevator doors and exchanged bewildered looks.
Had that really been the eldest miss of the Su family—the arrogant and overbearing Su Nuo?
If this was all an act, she was playing the part far too convincingly.

Her acting had improved considerably. No one knew what kind of grand scheme she was plotting.
Once inside the elevator, Su Nuo’s heart rose into her throat.
“You performed rather well just now.” Mo Xiaoxue looked at Su Nuo’s reflection in the elevator mirror.
Su Nuo wore her hair in a simple ponytail. Although she had only been back for a few days, she had already regained a healthy, fair complexion, and even the bruises left by her abuse had faded considerably.
Mo Xiaoxue snorted. “You’d better keep your head down from now on. Don’t think that coming to the company means you can parade yourself in front of President Duan. If I catch you going to him for no reason—hmph!”
Ding!
The elevator arrived. Mo Xiaoxue said nothing more and strode out.
Su Nuo took several deep breaths, barely steadying herself before following.
The head of Human Resources, Sun Changting, had received the notice first thing that morning and came out personally to greet them.
“Secretary Mo, the onboarding documents are ready. The eldest miss only needs to sign them.”
Whether the eldest miss had come to the family business in disguise to inspect it, or simply to follow the man who was her nominal elder brother, no one knew.
Mo Xiaoxue smiled, but her eyes were filled with disdain.
“I think we can forget about formal employment for now. Have her start as an intern.”
“An intern?” Sun Changting hesitated. “But President Duan said—”
“Do you think I don’t understand President Duan’s intentions? Or do you believe you understand him better than I do, Director Sun?”
Sun Changting gave an awkward laugh. “Of course Secretary Mo understands President Duan best. I was only making a guess.”
“Since President Duan has ordered her to intern, shall we send the eldest miss to the Marketing Department?”
He watched Mo Xiaoxue carefully. Only after she nodded did Sun Changting hurriedly instruct someone to replace the employment form with an internship form.
Su Nuo quickly filled in her personal information. But when she reached the section for an emergency contact, she hesitated.
Afraid of displeasing the staff member, she nevertheless quickly wrote down Chi Ling’s name and phone number.
At least he was Duan Yubai’s assistant. If anything happened, he could contact Duan Yubai or someone from the Duan family.
Sun Changting looked over the form, his expression difficult to describe.
“Miss Su, you really didn’t need to fill that in.”
Everyone in the company knew Su Nuo’s identity.
No one would ever need to contact the person listed there. It would have been perfectly fine to leave it blank.
Mo Xiaoxue picked up the form and looked it over before nodding in satisfaction.
“Su Nuo, that’s more like it. You are an employee of the Duan Group. Remember, there is no eldest miss here.”
“All right, go report to the Marketing Department. Don’t keep the manager waiting.”
