Chapter 23: Arrival

Following Ning Rujun’s detailed explanation, her parents, Ning Zhengang and Xu Xiuhong, finally learned what had transpired at the village entrance. They were incensed by the schemes orchestrated by Wei Zhitao and Feng Qingxue.

Xu Xiuhong paced back and forth in a fury, cursing, "The Feng family is absolutely shameless! I’m going over there right now to settle this score!"

Turning to her daughter, she added, "Rujun, stay out of this; let me handle it."

However, Ning Rujun held her mother back, shaking her head. "Mom, don’t be so hasty. Please, let me finish."

After calming her mother, Ning Rujun continued, "Mom, the reason I didn't finish what I had to say to Zhang Lanya earlier was because I wanted to finalize the engagement annulment smoothly and sever all ties with the Wei family. Although Feng Qingxue’s actions are despicable, they have at least allowed me to see the true colors of Wei Zhitao and the others, enabling me to cut my losses in time."

"Since things have reached this point, if we are to confront the Feng family, we must focus on their lack of morality—how they seduced someone else’s fiancé and engaged in premarital pregnancy. We must also emphasize that our engagement to the Wei family is officially over, so the Feng family can’t turn around and try to pin the blame on us later. I truly cannot trust Zhang Lanya when it comes to Wei Zhitao and Feng Qingxue."

"Many in the village witnessed Feng Qingxue suffering a miscarriage and being rushed to the hospital. They heard what the doctor said on the spot; the Feng family cannot deny it. Mom, handle the confrontation however you see fit, but don't let it affect your health. Getting angry over people like them isn't worth it. I have no intention of associating with Feng Qingxue or Wei Zhitao ever again. Whatever happens to them now is their own business."

Realizing that her daughter was genuinely determined to cut ties with Wei Zhitao, and wanting to avoid further harassment from the Wei family, Xu Xiuhong nodded solemnly.

To be honest, Xu Xiuhong had always harbored reservations about the engagement. While she had once been deceived by Wei Zhitao’s pleasant exterior, she knew Zhang Lanya’s character all too well. If her daughter were to marry into that family, having such a mother-in-law would be far from easy. As for Wei Zhitao, his excessive filial piety toward his mother was a significant concern in itself.

However, as long as the engagement stood, and with Wei Zhitao and Zhang Lanya maintaining a respectable facade, the Ning family had been left in a passive position. If they had proposed ending the engagement without a clear cause, they would have been the ones to lose face, which would have negatively impacted their daughter’s reputation. That was why Xu Xiuhong had persisted for so long.

She never imagined, however, that Zhang Lanya, Wei Zhitao, and Feng Qingxue would sink to such low, selfish, and base levels. Under these circumstances, there was no way she would allow her daughter to marry into that family. While she didn't regret the way the annulment was handled when Zhang Lanya came to their door, she had hoped for a better opportunity to make the separation public and complete.

Since the scandal involving Wei Zhitao and Feng Qingxue’s pregnancy and the subsequent medical emergency had become common knowledge, it gave the Ning family a strategic advantage in controlling the narrative.

But before they could even set out to address the matter, news reached them that Wei Zhitao and Feng Qingxue had met with a sudden accident—they were dead.

The news shocked Ning Rujun; it was completely unexpected. Yet, she knew that with those two gone, her life in this timeline would only be better.
