Always on the path of seeking you.
The soul-summoning flag no longer detected Xiangliu’s presence even in the far north. They began heading toward their next destination—the vast ocean. Standing on the shore, they felt the sea’s turbulent power.
Waves surged one after another like an endless legion of warriors, roaring and thundering as they crashed fiercely against the coastline.
All were deeply moved by this magnificent spectacle, as if they could truly sense the ocean’s might and majesty. The waves slapped against the rocks, spraying towering plumes of water before swiftly retreating, leaving behind a cacophony of noise and restlessness.
Xiao Yao closed her eyes, listening to the sound of the waves, feeling the breath of the sea, as if merging with it, sharing this tumultuous moment together. At that instant, she seemed like a daughter of the ocean.
The sea was Xiangliu’s home, and now it was hers as well. She shouted toward the ocean, “Xiangliu, we’re coming home!” Xiao Yao used her formation to plunge into the deep sea, where memories of her and Xiangliu dwelled. Xiangliu had lived with her beneath the waves for thirty-seven years. There, they had listened to the enchanting songs of the merfolk, witnessed the blooming of the stone sea flowers, admired the bright moonlight over the water, and seen Xiangliu’s most genuine smile. This place belonged to their shared, beautiful past.
Xiao Yao set her formation deep within the ocean, determined to guard it and await the day she would reunite with Xiangliu. Though the seawater was cold and dark, the thought of Xiangliu warmed her heart. In the deep sea, she played alongside a hawksbill turtle; schools of fish surrounded her, playing hide-and-seek. The large stone sea flowers opened and closed their mouths in the cutest manner. Xiao Yao even found a small seashell, not nearly as exquisite as Xiangliu’s old one—lacking its beautiful patterns and pure white hue—but she was delighted nonetheless, for it was her only home beneath the waves.
She sat within the softly glowing shell, admiring the underwater scenery. Occasionally, she listened to the merfolk’s songs or stole pearls from giant clams. Sometimes, she joined fish monsters in the great whirlpools to salvage rare treasures. Xiao Yao thought to herself, “Xiangliu is so silly. The ocean holds countless treasures, yet he’s always penniless. I wonder what those nine heads of his are thinking?”
She smiled at the thought, recalling how Xiangliu once offered her a jade pendant as payment to invite her to dinner.
