Chapter 56: They Have a Home of Their Own
When Luo Yunhe saw the thatched cottages up close, she froze in place, her face turning so pale and grim that it seemed as though water could be wrung from it.
The scene before her was far more dilapidated than she had imagined, practically deserving to be called appalling.
At that moment, Su Jingxuan was carried over by others. Looking at the sight before him, a trace of guilt inevitably surfaced on his face.
"Wife, perhaps we..."
Before Su Jingxuan could finish, Luo Yunhe interrupted him. "Hey! I actually think the environment here is quite nice, just a bit cluttered and in need of some tidying up!"
With that, she quickly adjusted her emotions, gently set down the things in her hands, and hurried over to Su Jingxuan.
"Husband, your leg is injured now and you need treatment right away. How about we take you to a medical clinic first, let you stay there temporarily, and pay the fees in advance? As for matters at home, you don't need to worry; I will figure out a way to handle them. The most important thing is to get your leg healed as soon as possible. Even if it truly cannot be cured, I believe I have the ability to support you!"
Hearing this, Su Jingxuan shook his head slightly and said, "No, we should save this money to build a house." With that, he pressed the money pouch containing their funds directly into Luo Yunhe's hand.
Luo Yunhe shook her head vigorously, a resolute expression on her face. Raising her head, she fixed her gaze on the men from the village, speaking with earnest and anxious tones. "Kind brothers, please do me a favor and take my husband to the medical clinic first. His leg injury cannot wait any longer; we must not delay further!"
Luo Yunhe was well aware of what was going on in Su Jingxuan's mind. One of his arms was already disabled, and now his legs had suffered such severe trauma, leaving him inevitably feeling depressed and despairing. But she would never allow him to sink into self-abandonment.
"Husband, my future life still depends on you. You must not become so dejected like this; we must get your leg treated first," Luo Yunhe said firmly.
She stuffed the money back into Su Jingxuan's hand, then turned and placed all the items she had brought into the thatched cottage. Those things were hardly worth much money anyway, so Luo Yunhe felt no particular attachment to them.
The men who had come from the village all knew each other. Back then, it was because they had seen Luo Yunhe for the first time and found her so beautiful that they had followed along with everyone else. Although they knew she was Su Jingxuan's wife, the appreciation of beauty is universal, and they had simply been looking. Now, seeing how difficult their lives had turned out, a sense of sympathy suddenly arose in their hearts.
"Mistress Su, don't you worry! We'll carry him to the medical clinic right now!"
Luo Yunhe nodded. "Thank you, brothers! But I must go along as well, just wait for me a moment!"
As soon as she finished speaking, Luo Yunhe hurried off toward the grape patch. When she returned, she was carrying a large bamboo basket on her back, filled to the brim with various plants. Some of these plants were recognized by the men, but others were completely unfamiliar, leading them to assume she had merely gone up the mountain to gather some herbs to sell.
However, Luo Yunhe offered no lengthy explanation and simply smiled faintly.
"Let's go!" With the bamboo basket on her back, Luo Yunhe quickly followed the men toward the medical clinic. Along the way, she prayed silently in her heart, hoping that Su Jingxuan would recover soon.
The strong men carried Su Jingxuan while Luo Yunhe walked closely behind them as they headed toward the town.
Inside the medical clinic, the atmosphere was tense and heavy.
"Doctor, how is he? Has the bone and tendon been damaged?" Luo Yunhe asked anxiously, her eyes filled with worry and unease.
"Mistress Su, his leg injuries have damaged the bones and tendons. External injuries are easy to treat, but internal injuries are extremely difficult to heal. If they do not heal properly, he is very likely to end up crippled for life!" the elderly physician said with a solemn expression.
Upon hearing this news, Luo Yunhe's heart plummeted, and tears welled up in her eyes involuntarily, though she forced them back, refusing to let them fall.
"Doctor! No matter what method it takes, you must help me cure him, no matter how much money it costs!" she said resolutely, her voice revealing an unshakeable determination.
The elderly physician sighed. "Naturally, I will do my utmost, but it is hard to say what the final outcome will be!"
The old doctor sighed deeply, but the injury was simply too severe; even with the greatest effort, a full recovery could not be guaranteed.
"I was wondering, during the period of his treatment, can he stay here at the clinic? I will come and stay with him every night," Luo Yunhe said.
She hoped to stay by Su Jingxuan's side as much as possible to offer him more support and encouragement.
The elderly doctor nodded. "Very well!" He understood Luo Yunhe's feelings and was willing to accommodate them.
Having obtained permission, Luo Yunhe finally breathed a sigh of relief. She walked over to the bed, tightly grasped Su Jingxuan's hand, and softly comforted him, "Don't worry, everything will get better. We will definitely find the best medical treatment to help you stand up again."
Looking at Luo Yunhe, Su Jingxuan felt filled with self-reproach and guilt.
He felt that he was already a useless person now, and whether he received treatment or not didn't matter—he even felt it wouldn't matter if he simply died.
Yet, when he saw the steadfast look in Luo Yunhe's eyes, he felt he could not bear to leave her.
"Thank you, Wife..."
"Why are you talking about thanks? Aren't we husband and wife? Since we are a family, there is no way I could just leave you to your fate like this.
Now that we have separated from the main household and have our own little family, naturally we must strive for our own home.
I know you feel terrible right now, but you need to think of me.
We still have many good days ahead of us; there's no need to be troubled by this temporary hardship.
As long as you can get better, I am willing to endure even more!"
Deeply moved by her words, Su Jingxuan reached out and squeezed her hand tightly.
Though she had countless words she wanted to express in her heart, she did not know where to begin.
"Alright, don't upset yourself anymore!" After offering a few more words of comfort, Luo Yunhe took out the money and handed it to the elderly physician.
She instructed him to use the best medicines and ensure that his food and drink were of good quality.
Handing over ten taels of silver all at once made the old doctor immensely happy, and he readily agreed.
The medical clinic was bustling with people, but there was a small side room available, so Su Jingxuan was settled directly into it. The old doctor even specially assigned a young apothecary's apprentice to assist him.
The apprentice would attend to Su Jingxuan's daily needs during the day.
After giving a few more instructions, Luo Yunhe finally showed the medicinal herbs she had brought to the elderly physician.
At first, the old doctor only saw some ordinary herbs, but when his eyes fell upon the items at the bottom of the basket, they lit up brightly.
