Chapter 55: Moving
When Luo Yunhe hurried to the kitchen, the contents stewing in the small clay pot were almost dried up. She quickly opened the lid to check and found only a tiny bit of broth left.
"Oh dear!" she sighed anxiously, quickly picking up a spoon to ladle the remaining broth into a bowl. Then, she added some water to the clay pot, covered it again, and hoped to continue simmering a delicious meal.
Luo Yunhe and Su Jingxuan had a simple dinner together. Since there was nowhere else to stay, Luo Yunhe had no choice but to find a spot in the courtyard, spread some hay and tattered rags, and make a crude bed.
Seeing this, the expressions of the others turned extremely unsightly, yet they could only helplessly bend down to clean up the mess scattered all over the ground.
Luo Yunhe knew in her heart that Su Jingxuan was injured and would likely run a fever tonight. Therefore, she did not dare to close her eyes the entire night, remaining constantly alert.
In the middle of the night, Su Jingxuan indeed developed a high fever, his forehead burning hot. Luo Yunhe hurriedly got up, fetched a basin of cold water, soaked a towel in it, and gently wiped his forehead, cheeks, and neck to help bring his temperature down.
However, the fever symptoms did not subside immediately. Luo Yunhe had to change the wet towel at regular intervals until dawn, when Su Jingxuan's temperature finally returned to normal.
After a night of tossing and turning, Luo Yunhe felt immensely exhausted, but she knew that Su Jingxuan still needed someone to take care of him at this moment. Thus, she mustered her spirit, walked into the kitchen once again, put the leftover meat from last night into the clay pot, added water, and continued to simmer it.
Early in the morning, Su Jingxuan slowly opened his eyes, feeling weak all over and somewhat dizzy in the head. He knew very well in his heart that he must have run a fever last night.
Looking at the petite figure still busy inside the kitchen, his heart was filled with guilt. At this very moment, he was covered in injuries from head to toe and was completely unable to help her with anything.
Looking at his injured leg, Su Jingxuan felt deeply distressed inside.
He did not want to become a useless person; he wanted to be her pillar of support, to be able to help her when she was in need, rather than being a drag on her.
Luo Yunhe walked out holding a bowl of meat broth and happened to see that he had woken up. She hurriedly walked over, set the meat broth aside, helped Su Jingxuan up bit by bit, and placed extra quilts behind him to serve as a support.
"You're awake? How are you feeling? Are you still uncomfortable?"
Su Jingxuan looked at her caring expression and took her hand. "My wife, I'm sorry. I—I've dragged you down!"
"What kind of foolish talk is that? How could you possibly drag me down? You never looked down on me even when I was out of my mind, and now you've merely been injured! Your injuries will heal sooner or later. We are husband and wife, so this is not called dragging me down!"
"I—"
"Alright, don't say another word! If you say any more nonsense like that, I'm going to get angry. Come, eat these things first; only after eating can your injuries recover quickly." Luo Yunhe brought a steaming bowl of meat broth before him, originally intending to feed him.
Su Jingxuan, however, shook his head. "I'll do it myself!"
"Fine! Eat your meal first. I'll simply tidy things up, and shortly after you finish eating, we'll move!"
Su Jingxuan pressed his lips tightly together without speaking, instead gazing at the meat broth in the bowl. Ultimately, he hardened his heart, gritted his teeth, and began to eat directly.
If he wanted to recover quickly, he had to take good care of his body. Only by nursing his body back to health could he recover swiftly and be able to help his little wife.
Luo Yunhe clearly knew that he was currently in a state of low self-esteem. Under such circumstances, she had to let go of certain matters and let him do them himself, so that he would not feel like he was burdening her.
Watching him finish the bowl of meat broth, Luo Yunhe used all her strength to finally help him onto a rack placed to one side.
The rack was in a half-sitting, half-lying position with a backrest. Luo Yunhe placed a pillow at the back so that he wouldn't feel uncomfortable sitting there.
She then wrapped all of their clothing and quilts together using a single bedsheet.
Their belongings were not very numerous, and when wrapped together, they formed just one large bundle.
After finishing her tasks, Luo Yunhe quickly washed her face, ate a little food, and waited for someone from the village to arrive.
Madam Su and the others had made do in the main room for the night. When they got up in the morning and saw Luo Yunhe and Su Jingxuan, the anger in their hearts flared up rapidly.
"They're only getting up when the sun is already high in the sky?" Madam Su glared with her triangular eyes, staring fiercely at Luo Yunhe and the others, her eyes filled with rage.
Despite having a great deal of dissatisfaction in her heart, Madam Su did not dare to say much at this moment. She knew this was not the time to offend them. Although she was extremely reluctant, she could only swallow her anger and endure.
After all, these two people—one mad, one useless—were about to be driven out. From now on, their affairs would have nothing to do with them anymore. If she provoked them at this time, in case they decided not to leave after all, the ones burdened would be themselves, and the ones suffering losses would still be them. Therefore, she could not let her emotions affect the ultimate goal.
Luo Yunhe did not even glance at them, merely sorting through her clothes on her own. She knew in her heart that these people harbored malicious intentions toward them, but she did not care. As long as she could leave this place, she would have the opportunity to change everything.
The family of five walked out of the main room in neat order.
Su Shan, with an iron-colored complexion and without uttering a word, strode toward the front gate. His gaze revealed a sense of firmness and resolution, as if he were casting everything from the past behind him.
Madam Su and Su Ruyi, wearing expressions of supreme disdain with their noses turned up, let out cold snorts and bypassed them as well. Their expressions were filled with contempt and mockery, as if displaying their victory to Luo Yunhe.
Su Jingxing wore an awkward expression, appearing as though he wanted to say something, but he was directly pulled away by Zhang Lingling, who tugged and dragged him along by his side. He cast a parting glance backward, a trace of guilt and helplessness welling up in his eyes. Yet, facing his wife's tugging, he could not break free and could only depart silently.
Watching their departing backs, an inexplicable wave of emotion surged in Luo Yunhe's heart.
The indifference and ruthlessness of these people chilled her to the bone, but at the same time, it ignited her deep inner fighting spirit. She secretly resolved that she must make herself stronger and never let anyone bully her and Su Jingxuan ever again.
She would definitely make those who looked down on them view them in a completely new light.
In the morning, the village chief found several men from the village and came to the Su family residence.
Four men carried Su Jingxuan, while the rest helped carry the belongings.
Luo Yunhe found two bowls in the kitchen, and along with the small clay pot, followed them to the thatched cottage.
