Chapter 9: The Investigation

“When I’m no longer so gentle with you, does that mean you think I’m not Ning Chu anymore? What kind of person do you think I am? Someone who never loses her temper, always gentle and elegant, smiling at you all the time, obedient and willing to endure everything without a single complaint?” Ning Chu stared at Dantai Chao with an expressionless face.
Dantai Chao hesitated, “No.” He really wasn’t used to this version of Ning Chu. Just now, he had suddenly felt that she seemed completely unlike herself. But… if she were angry, perhaps this was how she would be.
Ning Chu stood up. “If I’ve upset you, I won’t apologize. This is probably how I’ll be from now on. As for that agreement… if you’re not satisfied, you can say so. Take your time eating.” After saying this, Ning Chu left the dining table.
Earlier, when Dantai Chao and Ning Chu were eating, the servants had kept their distance and hadn’t heard the conversation between Su Yi and Dantai Chao. They only knew that the madam and the master seemed to have had an argument. The madam even turned her back on the master, left him to eat alone, and then went upstairs.
Those who were alert worked quietly, fearing that any noise might anger the master and lead to their dismissal.
They didn’t want to be fired. Many people wanted to serve in the Chaoyang Villa, and if they were dismissed, they wouldn’t even know where to cry.
Dantai Chao, however, was not angry. After Ning Chu went upstairs, he pondered for a while. He looked at the plate of spicy chicken, picked up his chopsticks, took a piece, and put it in his mouth. Instantly, a sharp, overwhelming spiciness hit him.
“Cough! Cough!” Dantai Chao started coughing from the heat, realizing it was even spicier than before. He hurriedly grabbed a glass of water and drank it. If he looked in the mirror, he would have seen that his face and lips were flushed bright red.
After finishing a glass of water, he felt a bit better, though the spiciness lingered. He then took a few bites of other dishes to suppress the heat and followed with several spoonfuls of rice.
Clearly, when Ning Chu ate earlier, it hadn’t been so intense, and she hadn’t drunk water either.
What Dantai Chao did not know was that Ning Chu ate only a little each day and had gradually become accustomed to the spiciness. She never ate much, just one or two bites, afraid her stomach wouldn’t tolerate more.
Back in her room, Ning Chu suddenly felt some regret. She had left the table impulsively, but hadn’t eaten enough…
Going downstairs to eat now seemed awkward. She lay on the bed, deciding to endure it and wait until Dantai Chao finished eating before looking for something to eat. There should be food in the refrigerator; if not, she would ask the chef to prepare something. Dantai Chao would surely be in his study after dinner.
What she didn’t know was that after finishing his meal, Dantai Chao had already ordered the chef, “Prepare something for the madam and send it to her.” He had noticed she hadn’t eaten much.
“Yes, sir.”

Ning Chu was sitting on the sofa in her room, playing with her phone. Recently, she found her phone quite entertaining. Whether browsing various online information or watching dramas, she found it all rather interesting.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. “Madam, it’s Ah Hua.”
Ning Chu opened the door with some curiosity. Ah Hua was holding a bowl of noodles. “Madam, this is what the master ordered to be made for you.”
Ning Chu hesitated for a moment, then decided she couldn’t shortchange herself. Her first rule after awakening was to never neglect herself. Leaving the table so abruptly earlier had been a mistake; she should have eaten her fill before leaving.
“Come in.”
Ah Hua glanced at the madam’s expression and realized she didn’t seem angry. She breathed a sigh of relief. If the madam and master had quarreled, she didn’t know whom to side with. The madam was stunning, and the master… was their big boss.
After Ah Hua left, Ning Chu ate the noodles while scrolling through her phone. The chef’s skills were excellent—the noodles were delicious. Soon, she finished and felt full.
She called someone to clear the dishes and stepped out to take a walk to aid digestion, having finished the entire large bowl of noodles.
Ning Chu wandered casually in the courtyard. She had walked here before but hadn’t noticed that upstairs, Dantai Chao was standing on the balcony watching her, holding a phone.
“Investigate what recently happened with the madam,” he instructed.
A voice came from the other end of the call: “Yes, sir.”
Dantai Chao stood on the balcony, watching Ning Chu stroll. He suddenly noticed that today’s outfit was different from usual: she wore a black short-sleeved shirt and shorts. This was… not very ladylike.
But seeing Ning Chu so relaxed puzzled him. He couldn’t understand why she wanted a divorce. If it was really because of him, that would be quite laughable. He refused to believe it.
He tended to think the cause lay with Ning Xingxian and Zhou Erqin, Ning Chu’s parents. He knew exactly what kind of people they were.
After a fifteen-minute walk, Ning Chu returned inside and went back to her room to continue her “pleasant activities” for the night.

Meanwhile, Zhou Ran had handed the divorce agreement to Ning Chu several days ago but hadn’t heard any news. She didn’t know if Ning Chu had truly divorced Dantai Chao. Moreover, she had seen rumors online about Dantai Chao and another woman, thinking that might be one reason for the divorce.
Unable to resist, Zhou Ran messaged Ning Chu, “So? Did he agree?”
Ning Chu replied, “Not yet. He just returned from a business trip and saw it. He’ll probably need a few days to consider.” After all, divorce was a serious matter.
Zhou Ran: “Okay, let me know if you need help.”
Ning Chu: “If I divorce, I’ll treat you to spicy hot pot.”
Zhou Ran: “!!! It’s a deal!”
For several days, Dantai Chao gave Ning Chu no answer. He went about his daily routine as usual. Ning Chu no longer woke him in the morning, didn’t say good morning or good night, and no longer helped him tie his tie. He was indeed unaccustomed to this. Still, he felt he needed to investigate the reasons behind the divorce carefully.
Ning Chu was in no hurry. Recently, her activities had lessened, but life was truly enjoyable. She had no job, didn’t need to wake early, could sleep in, no longer had to maintain a fake smile daily, and didn’t have to deliver lunch to Dantai Chao pretending to be a loving wife. She was genuinely happy!
But her happy days didn’t last long. Zhou Erqin, Mrs. Zhou, came looking for her!
Mrs. Zhou called directly and immediately asked, “Has your son-in-law come back yet? He didn’t bring any vixens home, did he? When you went to N City, did you catch anyone?”
“Oh, and I heard your father, for some unknown reason, wants to pay for that wretched woman’s daughter’s schooling? I think he’s lost his mind! I definitely won’t agree. If your father asks your opinion, remember not to agree, okay?”
“The Ning family has many enemies; I don’t know if you’re aware of that wretched woman’s situation. If anyone spreads rumors, it will be disastrous. When you attend gatherings, be sure to inquire. If anyone talks, threaten them so they dare not offend you.”
“By the way, I told you before to be careful about the child situation. Is your ovulation period coming? It’s best to get along well with your son-in-law at this time. If he goes on a business trip, you should go with him, understand? Don’t let those shameless women outside seduce your son-in-law.”
