Chapter 25: To Think I Had Found Myself a Love Rival
"Why?" Lin Xihe stared at her. "Why must you follow Yu Tingye? Tell me."
Seeing Shuangyi hesitate, Lin Xihe asked again, "Could it be that you feel I cannot protect you? You are worrying needlessly. As long as you are within this Night Palace, the people of the Demon Realm would not dare to cause you any trouble."
Shuangyi shook her head. "That is not the reason."
"Then what is?"
As Shuangyi stammered, Lin Xihe seemed to guess the truth. "Don't tell me you have fallen for Yu Tingye."
Shuangyi did not know how to explain it to her; she simply wanted a child with Lord Tingye. Only then would she and Shuangyu truly have something to rely upon; otherwise, everything else was just an illusion.
Lin Xihe could not help but laugh. She had been so well-intentioned, only to end up creating a rival for herself.
"Shuangyi, get up and speak." Lin Xihe wished she could kick herself.
Shuangyi stood up and tried to explain, "Miss Wan, please rest assured. Even if I follow Lord Tingye, I will never betray you again."
Lin Xihe let out another involuntary laugh. "Go then. If you want to follow Yu Tingye, go beg him yourself. Forgive me, but I cannot help you."
"Thank you, Miss Wan. You have already helped me enough; there is no need to trouble yourself further." Shuangyi turned and hurried away.
Lin Xihe was so frustrated it gave her a headache.
Ah Jiu entered and, seeing Lin Xihe clutching her head in apparent agony, hurriedly asked, "What is the matter, Miss?"
Lin Xihe looked as if she were losing her mind. "Ah Jiu, I have done something incredibly foolish."
-
"Lord Tingye." Shuangyi knelt before him.
Yu Tingye asked, "Didn't Wanwan already arrange tasks for you? Why have you come to find me again?"
Shuangyi subconsciously tugged at her collar, revealing her elegant collarbone. "I do not wish to go anywhere else; I only desire to stay by your side, Lord Tingye. I beg you to grant my request."
Yu Tingye could not help but study her. "Did Wanwan agree to this?"
"Yes."
The quill in Yu Tingye’s hand snapped in two. "Then come tonight."
"Very well." Shuangyi nodded, trembling with excitement.
-
Shuangyi followed his instructions and went to find Yu Tingye that night.
However, the hall was completely empty.
The lights were bright, and after waiting for a while, she still did not see Yu Tingye.
Suddenly, a creak sounded, like the noise of a door opening. She followed the sound and discovered a secret chamber.
*Could Lord Tingye be in there?* she wondered.
She stepped into the secret chamber cautiously. It was brightly lit, and her eyes immediately fell upon an open drawer. Driven by curiosity, she walked over to take a look. Inside lay a thick ledger.
She checked her surroundings, and seeing no one, she picked up the ledger and opened it.
The very first name was Meng Zhe, and a large cross was marked next to it.
She was so terrified she nearly dropped the book.
Shuangyi might have been foolish, but she understood exactly what this meant. She hurriedly put the ledger back and fled as fast as she could.
*Heavens, what have I seen?*
Not long after Shuangyi left, Yu Tingye appeared in the secret chamber and calmly returned the mechanism to its place.
Shuangyi walked along, utterly distraught, and nearly collided with Luoxue.
"Shuangyi? Why are you here?" Luoxue wondered if she was seeing things.
Shuangyi did not answer; she looked as if she had been scared out of her wits and ran off quickly.
-
Lin Xihe was just preparing to head out when Shuangyi burst in, looking disheveled. "Miss Wan, I have something I must tell you."
"Yu Tingye has summoned me; perhaps another day..."
In her desperation, Shuangyi grabbed her sleeve. "Miss Wan..."
Ah Jiu pulled Shuangyi aside. "Save your business for later. If my mistress upsets Lord Tingye, there will be big trouble."
Lin Xihe said, "How about this: you wait here, and I will be back soon."
