Splash, splash, splash...

Puddles on the road splattered with each step. The middle-aged man’s pant legs hung soaked, dripping wet, yet he paid it no mind.

He glanced warily behind him before quickly turning his head away. “Is it... is it really possible for someone to run away?”

“Isn’t it normal for people to be around? Just head to where I said. Don’t panic,” Li Chenqiu said with a steady gaze, revealing no trace of fear.

“All right! If you get me out of this alive this time, I’ll do whatever you say from now on!”

With that, the middle-aged man quickened his pace. Being chased like this was truly unbearable.

The awakened ones moved far faster than ordinary people. Soon, they reached the bridgehead. The man dared not delay and dragged Li Chenqiu onto the bridge.

But very soon, the man’s steps faltered—not because someone blocked their way, but because the bridge itself felt eerie!

At first, there had been pedestrians and speeding cars on the bridge. Now, it was completely empty. On the pedestrian walkway, only the sound of raindrops pattering echoed. On the asphalt road, not a single vehicle remained.

The man released Li Chenqiu and grasped his shoulders anxiously. “You said someone would meet us. Where are they? And why is this bridge deserted?!”

Li Chenqiu brushed the man’s hands away, rubbed his aching shoulders, and stepped to the guardrail. “Both ends of the bridge are sealed off. If you want to live, jump into the river. But be careful—Special Ability Bureau operatives might be stationed along the riverbank.”

“Jump into the river?” The man’s eyes widened in disbelief as he stepped behind Li Chenqiu. “I... can’t swim!”

“The person meeting us is Lu Jiang. If you can’t swim, then there’s nothing I can do,” Li Chenqiu said, pulling off his hood.

“You lied! You said someone was coming to help us!!!” The man’s neck veins bulged as he locked his arm around Li Chenqiu’s neck and pulled him in front of himself.

Li Chenqiu didn’t resist, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “How can you repay kindness with hostility?”

“You... shut up! Cooperate with me, or don’t expect to live!” the man shouted, dragging Li Chenqiu back toward the direction they came.

When they reached the bridgehead again, a Special Ability Bureau jeep blocked the entrance. Soldiers dressed in combat gear hid behind the jeep, cold barrels resting on the hood, aiming directly at the two men.

From the surrounding apartment buildings, onlookers poked their heads out of windows, snapping photos and recording videos on their phones, covertly monitoring the Bureau’s every move.

The middle-aged man had never seen such a scene before. He crouched behind Li Chenqiu, mustering courage to shout loudly, “Move aside! Everyone get out of the way, or I’ll kill this kid!!!”

Silence answered him, broken only by the relentless rain.

Click!

At that moment, the driver’s door of the jeep opened. A pale-faced young man bent forward as he stepped out.

His hair was neatly cropped short, his face sharply defined, eyes bright with an unyielding confidence and arrogance.

Li Chenqiu recognized him immediately—the deputy leader of the Fourth Task Force, Gong Qi.

Just as he remembered, he still wore black gloves and sported a smug expression that was almost maddening.

“You’re in charge here, right? Get me a car with a full tank. Make sure the border soldiers don’t stop me. Once I’m out of the city and into the Mist Zone, I’ll release the hostage. Do you hear me?!” the man yelled hoarsely.

This world wasn’t entirely governed by the Federation. Both humans and animals could awaken.

Outside the city lay the domain of these awakened ones, called the Mist Zone by the Federation. Many desperate awakened ones from the city fled there to survive.

Gong Qi smiled faintly, helplessly spreading his hands. “I can’t grant your demands. You’re involved in multiple murders. Under the Federation Security Law, the Special Investigation Bureau must eliminate awakened ones who disrupt social order.

So we won’t let you leave. If you release the hostage now, I can arrange for your family to visit you one last time. That’s as lenient as I can be.”

“You!” The man’s legs trembled, his bulging eyes seeming ready to pop out. “I have a hostage! If you don’t meet my demands, I’ll kill him!”

Li Chenqiu spoke calmly, “According to Federation Security Law, if an awakened one takes a hostage and makes demands that violate other laws, the Special Ability Bureau has the right to forcibly intervene. Didn’t you check the internet while holding me hostage?”

The man was stunned. “Impossible! That’s not how it’s shown on TV!”

“He’s right,” Gong Qi nodded. “You have ten minutes to consider. If you don’t release the hostage after that, the Bureau will take action.”

Hearing this, the man stood dumbfounded in the rain, silent.

Soon after, Special Ability operatives from the Second Task Force surrounded them from the west side of the bridge. Their leader, Wang Zhongshan, was among them.

Seeing this, the man’s mental defenses shattered completely. He screamed hysterically:

“Why? I just want to live! What’s wrong with that? I’ve only eaten those who deserved it! That dog boss stole my woman, I ate him—what’s wrong with that? What’s wrong with that?!”

“Blaming others for your own incompetence—aren’t you at fault?” Gong Qi said casually.

Those words were the last straw crushing the man’s spirit. Despair filled his eyes, but soon it was replaced by rage. He glared at the back of Li Chenqiu’s head:

“It’s all your fault! If it weren’t for you, I’d still be alive! If I’m going to die, you won’t live either!”

With that, the man loosened his arm around Li Chenqiu’s neck, then suddenly clenched his fist and smashed it toward Li Chenqiu’s forehead through the rain.

The Special Ability operatives immediately pressed their fingers to their triggers, waiting for Li Chenqiu’s death.

Just as the fist was about to strike Li Chenqiu’s brow, a few raindrops slid down through his hair, lingering just before his forehead.

Crack!

The sharp sound of bone breaking pierced the rainy night. The man’s fist seemed to have struck a wall, his wrist joint bending backward at a sharp angle.

“Ahhh!”

A pitiful scream echoed through the rain. The man clutched his wrist, grimacing as he collapsed to the ground.

Though awakened ones could regenerate endlessly, that didn’t mean they didn’t feel pain.

Everyone stared at one another in disbelief—Gong Qi and Wang Zhongshan included.

Who managed to take down an awakened one?

But the experienced Wang Zhongshan quickly figured it out: if the man wanted to kill the hostage, why not just snap their neck? Why clench a fist and strike the forehead? Only one explanation—

“Hostiles identified! Both are awakened ones!”
