Chapter Eight: This Is a "Gourmet" Show

Yan Chuanzhou did not respond directly but quietly picked up a plastic bag and began selecting crayfish with practiced ease. Wei Feng watched his movements silently, saying nothing. Recalling the crayfish in Jiang Chiyu’s basket, Wei Feng turned toward the vegetable stall and asked the vendor, “Do you have any extra spicy chili peppers? What about ginger?”
“Yes, these small red chilies are the spiciest. Handsome, how many do you want?” The woman reached under her stall and placed a packet of dried small chilies in front of Wei Feng, casually handing over a few slices of ginger as well.
The ginger still had dirt clinging to it, fresh and vibrant.
Wei Feng glanced at the money left in his hand—only six yuan—and decided to give the woman all of it. “I’ll take four yuan worth of chilies and two yuan of ginger. Thank you.”
The woman accepted the money and handed over the weighed chilies and ginger.
Before long, Wei Feng was the first to leave the market, his basket brimming with ingredients.
Yan Chuanzhou followed closely behind, having bought crayfish, chilies, and ginger—his selection almost identical to the “Jiang and Wei” team’s ingredients.
Lastly came Xu Chu. Though he didn’t cook, he had purchased a wide variety of vegetables—almost every kind available.
Fang Yingying looked at Xu Chu’s basket, filled exclusively with green vegetables, and felt a wave of despair. She stepped back two paces and exclaimed, “Are you preparing a vegetarian feast for me? It looks so unappetizing—I want meat!”
Xu Chu glanced at his basket, scratched his head awkwardly, and said, “Haha, I wasn’t sure what to buy, so I just grabbed a bit of everything. Surely there’s something you’ll like.”
Their interaction was shy and natural, like a young couple just beginning to date.
[“Chu and Ying are just too adorable! Their interactions are so sweet—someone give me a sugar overdose!”]
[“Xu Chu is so cute with his unmistakably straight male traits.”]
[“They have this ‘it’s the participation that counts’ laid-back vibe; neither cares about winning or losing, just having fun together. They’re perfect for each other!”]
Yet when Lin Qingyue stepped forward to greet Yan Chuanzhou, he ignored her once again.
Off camera, Yan Chuanzhou’s gaze remained fixed on Jiang Chiyu, watching her and Wei Feng intently, his expression dark and unreadable.
The camera panned, and Lin Qingyue swallowed her frustration, forcing a smile as she followed closely behind Yan Chuanzhou, hoping to see what he had bought. But he deliberately avoided her.
Sensing the tension around Yan Chuanzhou, she cautiously asked, “Chuanzhou, what are you thinking? You should know what I like to eat, right?”

“I do.” Yan Chuanzhou shot her an impatient look and answered in a low voice, his tone laced with displeasure and dismissiveness.
Yet that was enough to soothe Lin Qingyue.
She exhaled deeply, as if releasing her worries. The tension in her brow eased, and she secretly felt triumphant, silently competing with Jiang Chiyu.
Meanwhile, Wei Feng approached Jiang Chiyu and placed some of his small spicy chilies into her basket.
Jiang Chiyu’s eyes immediately brightened. Smiling, she said, “Thank you. How did you know I wanted this?”
Wei Feng returned her smile, his voice gentle. “It pairs perfectly with your crayfish. I thought you’d like it.”
Jiang Chiyu looked at him slyly and patted his shoulder. “You truly understand this general.”
[“Calling her ‘this general’ every other sentence—Jiang Chiyu just can’t get out of character. Wei Feng is such a good guy, having to deal with this goddess every day.”]
[“But I think Wei Feng spoils her a lot. He’s only smiling when he sees Jiang Chiyu—the look in his eyes is far from innocent.”]
[“They really complement each other—one’s chaotic, the other observant. It’s such a harmonious scene.”]
Jiang Chiyu was still basking in her triumph when the director interrupted.
“Brother Wei, all ingredients must be bought for yourselves. You cannot buy for others. This is against the competition rules.”
Wei Feng calmly retorted, “You didn’t mention this rule at the start. Isn’t it a bit late to bring it up now?”
The directors fell silent, realizing their oversight.
Reluctantly, they conceded, “Alright, but only this once. No more ingredient exchanges later.”
Wei Feng nodded without further comment.
Since the filming location had only one kitchen, the production arranged the schedule accordingly.
“Now, we’ll escort all the teachers back to the kitchen. Based on the total time each team took to shop, Teacher Xu and Teacher Fang’s group finished quickest, so they’ll have first access to the kitchen.”
Fang Yingying and Xu Chu were stunned. They immediately interrupted, “Wait! Can we be last? We’re worried we might blow up the kitchen and then have nothing to eat.”
The directors hadn’t anticipated this and were momentarily at a loss before awkwardly agreeing, “Okay, then Brother Wei and Miss Jiang’s team will start first.”

“Great! We’ll finally get to eat! I’m starving.” Fang Yingying happily chimed in.
[Fang Xiaoying is so cute. She’s not expecting to eat what she cooks—she’s just here to freeload a meal!]
[I declare the ‘Chu and Ying’ duo the biggest comic relief of the show!]
[Xu Chu and Fang Yingying definitely belong on a food show—they have what it takes to be food judges.]
Everyone rode back to the filming site.
Jiang Chiyu entered the kitchen first, recalling the spicy crayfish she’d eaten at the Yan family estate, and attempted to recreate the dish for the first time.
The aroma of the crayfish filled the entire kitchen, instantly making the whole crew hungry.
After a while, Jiang Chiyu brought the dish to the table. Fang Yingying and Xu Chu rushed over, swallowing hard, and asked, “Chiyu, can you set out an extra bowl and chopsticks for us later?”
“Of course.” Jiang Chiyu handed her chopsticks to Fang Yingying.
But Fang Yingying quickly waved her off. “No, no, those are for Brother Wei. He should have the first taste.”
“It’s alright. He won’t mind,” Jiang Chiyu said plainly, easing Fang’s concern.
Wei Feng brought out bowls and chopsticks, placing them in front of Fang Yingying. “Go ahead. You two don’t usually hold back like this.”
Picking up a knife and fork, Wei Feng peeled the first crayfish and handed it to Jiang Chiyu. “Chef, you taste first.”
Jiang Chiyu, apron on, hands slightly oily and unable to use chopsticks, opened her mouth and ate the first crayfish without hesitation.
The atmosphere between them sparked a round of cheers.
However, no one noticed that a chill had suddenly radiated from Yan Chuanzhou.
