With his hands and feet untied, Master Cao clung tightly to Yan Yu’s leg, rubbing his nose and tears all over him.

“Master, I’ve suffered terribly these past few days! They wouldn’t give me food or water. Every so often they’d come in and beat me, then interrogate me about whether I was a reporter. What kind of reporter am I? It just so happened that the used car I bought still had something left behind by its previous owner—a press pass. They wouldn’t listen to a word of my explanation!”

Yan Yu helped Master Cao to his feet and asked, “Who do you mean by ‘they’?”

“One fellow with a tumor on his neck, and an old man who walks with a cane. The moment I asked about a woman named Zhang Weiwei, they locked me up here!”

As soon as he finished speaking, a group of people suddenly burst into the courtyard. Yan Yu took a close look and saw that it was none other than the village chief, Wang Fugui!

“That’s him! That old man was the one who captured me!” Master Cao cried hastily.

Yan Yu stared grimly at the village chief. The old man, who had once seemed so kind and benevolent, now faced him with a cold question.

“Chief, care to explain?”

The village chief’s expression was exceedingly grim. “Just who are you?”

“Answer my question!” Yan Yu shouted.

To bully Yan Yu’s friend was to cross the line he held most sacred.

Yet the village chief was no harmless old man. With a sweep of his hand, he ordered, “Arrest them all!”

The burly villagers who had followed him blocked the courtyard entrance, their faces savage as they surrounded Yan Yu and the others.

Master Cao had already gone several days without food. Faced with such a scene, he was so frightened that he could barely stand.

One of the men charged forward, intending to restrain Yan Yu. Yan Yu easily dodged him, then brought his foot down hard on the man’s instep. The force was so tremendous that it snapped the bones in his toes, leaving his entire foot caved in.

“Argh!”

The man screamed and collapsed, clutching his foot.

“This kid won’t be easy! Everyone, get him!” the villagers shouted.

They swarmed Yan Yu and pinned him down in an instant. Though he was highly skilled, he could barely put his abilities to use beneath their weight.

“Boss, I’m coming!” Hao Zhuang roared. He grabbed two villagers and hurled them aside with impressive force.

But there were still at least a dozen burly men in the courtyard. Yan Yu and Hao Zhuang alone were no match for them.

Just then, Fatty suddenly shouted, “All of you, stop right now!”

The scene was utterly chaotic, and no one paid the slightest attention to him.

“Stop!”

This time, the voice belonged to Village Chief Wang Fugui.

The villagers abruptly ceased their attack and turned around. To their astonishment, that shameless Fatty had taken advantage of the chaos to circle behind them and seize the village chief!

Fatty’s three-hundred-pound body was pressed against the eighty-year-old chief, nearly crushing his bones.

“Behave yourselves, or I’ll crush this damned old tortoise!” Fatty threatened.

The village chief was squeezed so tightly that he could barely breathe. His withered face quickly turned pale. Yan Yu and Hao Zhuang brought Zhang Weiwei and Master Cao over to Fatty’s side, taking control of the chief.

Master Cao said weakly, “Master, that old man is truly wicked. He bought two wives for his son—one jumped into the river and died, and the other went mad. That still wasn’t enough for him. His son even wanted to prey on the girls in the village school!”

“Human trafficking?!” Fatty exclaimed, then kicked the village chief viciously.

The chief was advanced in years and could not withstand such a blow. His lips had already gone white, and he could barely remain standing.

Yan Yu’s face darkened. “So Zhang Weiwei was the wife you bought for your son, Wang Yong. And our missing classmate, Yang Xuefei—your son was responsible for her disappearance as well?!”

“I don’t know… I truly don’t know anything…” the village chief insisted stubbornly.

“Looks like we’ll have to use a little force on you!” Fatty said viciously, rubbing his fist, which was as large as a sandbag.

“This is a society governed by law! You can’t use torture on me!”

Before Fatty could make a move, a stone suddenly flew into the courtyard and struck the village chief directly in the head. Blood immediately gushed from the wound.

Fatty grinned. “Old bastard, looks like karma finally caught up with you!”

Hao Zhuang stepped forward and picked up the stone, puzzled. “How did a stone just happen to fly in here?”

Then he noticed that something seemed to be tied to it. When he turned it over, he was so startled that he dropped it at once.

“Boss, there’s a finger tied to this stone!”

“What?!”

Yan Yu was startled. He quickly picked up the stone and examined it. Sure enough, there was a finger attached to it.

The finger was rough and calloused, and the blood upon it had not yet fully dried. It appeared to have been severed only a short while ago.

Everyone stared at one another, speechless. Yan Yu was certain that it did not belong to any of the people currently missing.

The village chief clutched his head and glanced at the finger in Yan Yu’s hand. His expression changed dramatically.

“It’s my son’s! That finger belongs to my son!”

“Wang Yong?” Yan Yu asked, frowning.

“Someone has kidnapped my son!” the village chief said, his face deathly pale.

Yan Yu removed the finger from the stone and tossed it into the chief’s hands. His voice was grave.

“They came prepared this time. If you’re hiding anything, I advise you to confess everything now. Otherwise, I’m afraid your son may not survive.”

The village chief held his son’s finger with trembling hands, hesitation showing clearly on his face.

Zhang Weiwei, who had been standing in a daze, suddenly scrambled up from the ground. She rushed forward, knocked the village chief down, and sank her teeth viciously into his ear.

With a wet tearing sound, the entire left side of the chief’s head suddenly appeared hollow—and Zhang Weiwei spat an ear from her mouth.

“Pull her away!” Yan Yu shouted hurriedly.

Fatty and Hao Zhuang remained unmoved. For a bastard who trafficked in women, losing an ear was getting off lightly.

“You bastard! You filthy old beast! You and your son—and every person in Windgate Village—will never die a peaceful death!” Zhang Weiwei screamed. “You’re the ones who caused Ye Han’s death. Now she’s come back to take revenge on us! I’m going to die, you’re going to die, and every one of us is going to die!”

Yan Yu crouched beside the village chief and said solemnly, “Tell me exactly what you and your son have done, if you still want your son to live.”

The chief clutched his head as blood continued to pour from the wound. His voice trembled.

“You can’t blame us. I only wanted a grandson. Is that wrong?”

“I don’t have time for your nonsense. Speak!” Yan Yu barked.

The village chief drew a deep breath and slowly began.

“Yes, we bought Zhang Weiwei. But her own parents were the ones who sold her to us. Twenty years ago, we paid twenty thousand yuan—a fortune in those days. Who could have known that after we brought her home, the woman would turn out to be unable to bear children? Her parents had already moved to the city with her younger brother. We had no choice but to force Zhang Weiwei to trick her classmates into coming here!”

“I only wanted a grandson! Is that wrong?”
